Women's Soccer: FAU Falls 2-0 to North Texas

The University of North Texas scored once in each half to spoil the Sun Belt Conference home opener for the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team 2-0 on Friday night at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

The Mean Green struck first in the 28th minute on a header by Lauren Shockey beat the outstretched goalkeeper off a corner kick from the right attacking side by Julie Lackey.

FAU had a golden scoring opportunity in the opening half as senior Ashley Mannarino slipped behind the defense to create an odd-man rush for FAU.  Mannarino fired a shot that initially was saved by the Mean Green goalkeeper.  However, the rebound directed towards the middle of the box and Anhani Tran’s second effort sailed just high of the crossbar.

North Texas scored an insurance goal in the 84th minute as Michelle Young scored her team-high sixth goal after dribbling the ball to the top right corner of the box and finishing in the upper left corner of the net.

Jamie Greany, Laura Hyvonen, Mannarino and Tran each had one shot in the loss for the Owls.  North Texas outshot FAU by a 16-4 margin and recorded all six corner kicks in the contest.

Owls’ freshman goalkeeper Ashley Parrinello had seven stops for in net in her second career start.

FAU drops to 2-8-2 on the season and 0-3 in the Sun Belt while North Texas remains unbeaten in league play with three victories.  Overall the Mean Green stands 7-4 on the season.  The Owls return home on Sunday afternoon against University of Denver at noon.
