Boca Raton Campus Master Plan

The stadium (40000 seats) and convocation center (15000 seats) are in the exact same location that they were in the 2001 plan. Now, a lot of construction does not follow the timeline set out here, but it's interesting that the convocation center/arena is listed as 3-5 years away while the stadium is 5-10 years. It all depends on funding. I truly doubt that a convocation center will even be started before the stadium is complete, but if there is a magic source of funding anything can happen. The convocation center has been on the capital improvement plan for awhile.

A 40000-sq ft addition to the gym (sorry, I mean "The Burrow") and a 25000-sq ft expansion of the Oxley Center are also scheduled for 5 to 10 years from now. Additionally, a new parking garage is planned to go between the Oxley and the gym.

Anything in blue on the map is far off and only conceptually proposed. The new buildings in yellow are the most certain. However, even those are no sure thing. For example, the new Engineering building is scheduled to start construction soon (and has already received $3 million for planning) but is dependent on successful lobbying in Tallahassee for an additional $17 million for the first phase. If the lawmakers don't allocate the funds the project will be pushed back.

Since the Innovation Village still hasn't been formally planned (maybe in May 2007) it is not yet part of the master plan. There is some student housing that is planned on the north side of campus, but none of the retail is there. Greek housing is also shown near the stadium. The master plan without the Innovation Village still looks very promising.

FAU is growing!

When you see the campus plan and compare it to the Innovation Village the reservations of the BOT become clearer. Initially the project was going to include a hotel, a cancer research center, a WWII museum, houses (for anyone to buy), apartments, parking, retail, dorms, and the Dome. That proposal would have turned FAU into a circus, not a campus. With time we *will* have both a stadium (domed or not) and a convocation center, and with a lot of time it is possible to do it without leasing a large portion of campus to external developers. The problem with the domed stadium was not the stadium itself, but all the extra, unnecessary things that would come with it. It's tough to find strip malls on campus appealing.

What would be the sense in throwing all that $%^T together on campus?? Why would people want to buy houses on FAU campus property?? Why have a WWII museum?? Some things are just ridiculous. The FAU campus is physically isolated from the rest of the community. It doesn't make sense to try to bring the community into the campus. Ideas like the above mentioned work where the University and community are physically integrated. They look and sound absolutely stupid when the University and community are clearly separate physical entities. GO OWLS!!!
