Re: Indiana Lands Former MVP and Owl Yolanda Griffith

An unfortunate incident given she announced this was her last season…she racked up many accolades en route to posting the best field goal percentage in FAU school history.

Florida Atlantic University Athletics Hall of Famer Yolanda Griffith has been nominated for the WNBA Top 20@20 presented by Verizon, honoring the greatest and most influential players in WNBA history. Griffith is one of 60 players nominated for the 20-woman list, which will be unveiled Tuesday, June 21st.

Griffith came to FAU in 1992 and elevated FAU’s women’s basketball program from a regional to a national contender. Griffith guided the Owls to a 20-8 record and the program's fourth regional appearance. She holds the FAU single season record for points scored (621) scoring average (28.2), field goal percentage (.631), rebounds (352) and rebounding average (16.0), despite playing in just 22 games. Griffith was named the NCAA Division II Kodak Player of the Year and was named an All-American after leading the nation in scoring.

After her collegiate career, Griffith played professionally in Europe, with the American Basketball League and played eight seasons with the WNBA's Sacramento Monarchs (1999-2006). While with the ABL Long Beach Stingrays (1997-98) she was named First-Team All-ABL and was the Defensive Player of the Year and Victor Award Winner.

She joined the Monarchs in 1999. She was named to the All-WNBA First team in 1999 and 2005 and the All-WNBA second team in 2000, 2001 and 2004. Griffith earned WNBA Finals MVP in 2005 and surpassed 3,000 WNBA career points in the same season. She ranks second all-time in the WNBA in offensive rebounds (905) and ranks tenth all-time in total rebounds (2,444). Griffith guided the Monarchs to the 2005 WNBA Championship, a first in franchise history. She also led the 2000 and 2004 USA Olympic Team to gold Medals.

Arguably the most accomplished athlete (post-FAU career) in school history. I hope she makes the list. She made the Top 10 list after 10 years of the WNBA.
