Recruiting: Top State Guard Prospect Heading to FAU

Boca Ciega's Latavia Dempsey, considered by most to be among the state’s best returning guards this season, had several scholarship offers but in the end chose Florida Atlantic as the Times reported back in September.

Her reason for picking the Owls was simple, Pirates coach Will White said.

“FAU was on her for the longest period of time,” White said. “They saw her early and really committed to watching her play. That was big for her. She wanted to go where she felt the most wanted. It was a good fit.”

FAU offered a year ago.

This week, Dempsey, a 5-foot-7 shooting guard, will make it official by signing on the dotted line. As of this morning, White was still waiting for a packet of papers from FAU to arrive in the mail that includes the all-important letter-of-intent.

“As soon as I get it, she’ll sign” White said. “It should be today or tomorrow.”

In helping lead the Pirates to the state semifinals last season, Dempsey averaged 16 points per game, made 62 3-pointers, grabbed 130 rebounds and handed out 145 assists.

Dempsey considered Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Long Island, Marshall and Rhode Island
