Women's Hoops: Ball Handling Dooms FAU In 88-71 Loss To MTSU

Owls tie a season-high with 25 turnovers

The women’s basketball team battled hard but in the end could not overcome a season-high 25 turnovers in an 88-71 loss to Middle Tennessee State on Saturday at FAU Arena.

“We had a good game plan today, but turnovers killed us,” said head coach Chancellor Dugan.

The Owls (14-14, 10-8) shot a season-high 58.8% (10-of-17) from three-point range as Teri Stamps tied a career-high with five three-pointers. Stamps finished 5-for-6 from behind the arc in the game and scored a team-high 17 points.

“We were able to break their press and that led to some open looks for us,” Dugan said.  “We have a lot of players stepping up at the right time and we will need them next week in the Sun Belt tournament.”

FAU started the game with momentum, taking a 13-4 lead with 14:20 remaining in the first half.  THe Blue Raiders (22-5, 17-1) were able to get their offense rolling however and took a 38-32 lead heading into halftime.

In the second half, the two teams matched blow-for-blow until the 16-minute mark, when MTSU went on an explosive 15-0 run over a four-minute stretch to take control of the game at 63-44.

The Owls however came storming back.  A Stamps three-pointer and back-to-back Brittany Bowe layups cut the FAU deficit to 76-66 with 6:21 to play.

The final dagger for FAU came after another quick 10-0 burst from the Blue Raiders gave MTSU a commanding 86-66 with only four minutes remaining.

Carla Stubbs and Brittany Bowe both had solid performances in their final home game at FAU Arena.  Stubbs finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while Bowe added 11 points and tied a season-high with nine assists.

“It definitely hurts,” said Bowe about the loss.  “But this will by no means hinder us in the tournament next week, if anything we will learn from it and get better.”

The Owls will be either the five or six seed in next week’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament depending on the outcome of the FIU-Western Kentucky game, being played later today in Miami.  If the Lady Toppers win, the Owls will receive the five seed and will take on the 12-seed at 11 a.m. eastern on Sat. March 6 in the first round.  If FIU wins, FAU will be slotted into the sixth spot and will play the 11-seed at 1 p.m. eastern next Saturday.  The 2010 Sun Belt Tournament will be held at the Convention Center in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
