Women's Hoops: FAU Slips Past Eastern Kentucky 66-58

Brittany Bowe continued her hot shooting as the Owls defeated Eastern Kentucky 66-58 from McBrayer Arena on Saturday afternoon.  Bowe led the Owls in scoring for the second straight game with 18 points on 8-of-17 shooting.  The senior point guard also grabbed four rebounds, two steals and dished three assists.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair with nine ties and 12 lead changes throughout the game.  FAU trailed 20-19 with three minutes until halftime when Lyrell Barfield made a three-pointer to put the Owls ahead 22-20.  Two Breana Koné free-throws followed up by two more free-throws by Barfield gave FAU their largest lead of the first half at 26-20.  The Owls maintained that six-point lead and took a 31-25 advantage into halftime.

Despite the lead, FAU could not keep the momentum early in the second half as the Lady Colonels battled back to take a 40-39 edge with 10:32 left.  A pair of Andrea Taylor free-throws put FAU ahead for good at 47-46 with 7:57 remaining.  Taylor finished with 10 points and made her team-leading ninth three-point basket of the season.    FAU’s defense took care of the rest as the Owls only allowed 12 points in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.

FAU forced a season-high 32 turnovers as Eastern Kentucky did not have an answer for the stifling Owls’ defense.  Teri Stamps was one of the reasons for EKU’s offensive inconsistency.  The sophomore got her first start of the season and led the team with four steals.

The Owls return home after finishing their three-game road trip 1-2.  FAU will host three-games next week, the first coming on Tuesday night when Kent State pays a visit to FAU Arena for a 7 pm tip-off.
