Women's Hoops: FAU Races Past North Texas 94-76

Three Owls record career-highs in points

The Florida Atlantic women’s basketball team outscored North Texas 52-35 in the second half and cruised to a 94-76 victory over the Mean Green at the Super Pit on Wednesday night.

“The team really wanted this one,” said head coach Chancellor Dugan.  “They were upset after the loss against FIU and it showed tonight.”

The Owls (11-11, 7-5) received career-high performances from Lyrell Barfield, Jessica Knurick and Teri Stamps.  Barfield netted a career-high 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting with 17 markers in the second half.  The junior shooting guard from Miami via Midland Junior College hit 3-of-7 from behind the arc in the victory.

Stamps set her career-high mark with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Knurick also notched a career-high with 17 points on 7 of-9 from the floor.

In the first half, FAU sprinted out of the gates and led 16-5 after six minutes of action.  The Mean Green (6-17, 3-9) got 10 first half points from Ravven Brown to close the opening stanza as the Owls held a slim 42-41 lead heading into the break.

The offensive onslaught continued in the second half for FAU as they scored a season-high 52 points on 17-of-25 shooting (68.0%).  The 94 point total was a season high for the Owls as well, topping FAU’s opening night 93-61 victory over Webber International.

Brittany Bowe continued her strong play with 14 points and six helpers to go along with three steals and only two turnovers.  The senior, 2nd in the Sun Belt Conference in assists per game, is now five points away from 1,000 for her career.

Brittney James led North Texas with 19 points as five Mean Green players scored in double-figures.  Denetra Kellum and Racquel Cuffie chipped in 12, and Jasmine Godbolt and Brown finished with 10 apiece.

FAU returns to Sun Belt action on Saturday afternoon as they continue their road trip in Colorado against Denver.  Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (E.T) from Magness Arena.
