Women's Hoops: Owl's Tripped Up By Kent State 84-66

FAU's women’s basketball team fell to Kent State 84-66 on Tuesday night at FAU Arena.  The Owls (2-3) were led on offense by Lyrell Barfield who scored 16 points and made 6-of-12 shots from the field.  Barfield also made four three-pointers in the contest.

The Golden Flashes (3-1) took control early and started off the game on a 21-5 run.  However, FAU would lead a furious comeback and cut the deficit to 33-31 with 1:55 remaining in the first half.  After two three-pointers by Jena Stutzman ballooned the lead back up to eight, Jessica Knurick made a field goal followed by a driving layup at the buzzer by Brittany Bowe to send FAU into the halftime locker room trailing by only four points at 39-35.

Kent State came out with a purpose in the second half however and extended the lead to 48-37 in the first four minutes.  FAU could not recover and played from behind the rest of the way en route to the loss.

Breana Turner was a bright spot on offense for the Owls as the sophomore poured in 12 first-half points during FAU’s comeback.  Jessica Knurkck also cracked the double-digit mark in scoring with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

For Kent State, Jena Stutzman and Jamilar Humes led all scorers with 17 points each.  Stutzman made 7-of-11 shots in the game including 3-of-5 from three-point range.

The Owls will rest over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the court on Friday for the first round of their annual holiday tournament against Fordham.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
