Main points:

"The United Way of Martin County and Florida Atlantic University are looking to join forces to provide health care to people without health insurance by building and operating a health and wellness center

On Wednesday, the United Way of Martin County board of directors told its staff to negotiate… with FAU's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing on an agreement to establish and operate the wellness center.

FAU's nursing school already operates similar centers in Palm Beach County that provide primary health care, screenings, referrals, help finding follow-up services and enrollment for insurance and benefits for low-income families.

The health center would see "everyone who comes in the door, regardless of their ability to pay," said Shirley Countryman Gordon, an associate professor at the FAU nursing school.

Services would be provided free of charge, Gordon said, although patients will be encouraged to pay what they can."

Nice work, FAU.

Too bad FAU refuses to provide health insurance for her graduate assistants (unlike many other schools).

At FSU we only get a discount on health insurance ($500/academic year), not completely free.
