Track forecast for Ike
The computer models were in two distinct camps this morning, but are now in better agreement on a more southerly track for Ike. This increases the danger for the Bahamas, Haiti, Cuba, and Florida. A southward component of motion is now forecast by all of the computer models except the UKMET, making it very likely that Ike will move into the Bahamas by Sunday. The GFDL is the furthest south, projecting a landfall in Cuba as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane on Sunday night. The UKMET is the furthest north, projecting that Ike will miss the Bahamas, but hit South Florida. All of the models bring Ike within 200 miles of Miami by Tuesday. The HWRF brings Ike to a point 50 miles from Miami on Tuesday, as a Category 4 hurricane.

I miss the humor in the idea of a category 4 hitting us.  ???

Re: This one has me worried

I agree, this could be a pretty intense storm for SoFla. Just a word of advice, get out. If it's going to hit us as a category 4, just leave. I may only be in college, but my dad was a fire fighter in Miami for 33 years and he knows whats what when it comes to hurricanes. The university will probably close when they know if we are going to get bad weather. Even if we are fortunate enough to not get hit, we'd probably get some bad rain bands and foul weather, so they'd probably cancel class, for at least a day because driving conditions would be so bad.

I guess that I am not one to worry about something that is at least 4 or 5 days away and if statistics play out will not effect us in a major way.  The one good thing about the path of the storm aimed directly at you 5 days out is that hurricanes never seem to follow the path.  If it is still aimed at us on Sunday night my jovial mood about the storm may change…

Re: This one has me worried

This storm is gonna keep everyone in suspense till the very last minute.  I guess from what I am hearing, everything is dependant on a high pressure system that is forecasted to move off.  Depending on when it moves will determine when Ike makes that Northern turn, if it does.  Statisically, it should not hit us, but I don't like the models so far.  The one good thing about Ike is that to me it seems to be a compact storm, unless things change.  I think we will all have a better idea of what to do come sunday/monday.

But if anyone is sitting in the bullseye next week, and this thing is still a cat 4, don't be stupid, leave.  You may lose your stuff, but its only stuff.  Besides, being without power for weeks at a time is no fun at all, been there done that.  I had the eyewall of Charlie go over the house in 04, and that cat 1 woke me up bigtime.  I don't want to experience anything stronger than that ever.

There will never be another Andrew in SoFla. Maybe one like it…but that storm was WOW.

FAU will "continue to monitor the storm" and probably make a call this weekend. Because of it's intensity, FAU will have to evacuate the resident halls and what not, so they may make a statement sooner than usual.

I would assume (and you know what happens when people assume) that some kind of e-mail and/or message will go out today just telling people to watch the web site over the weekend and FAU will probably make a call Sunday. Again, that's my assumption.
