Florida Tech is 'ready for some football!'

The Florida Tech Board of Trustees today approved adding football to the university’s intercollegiate athletic programs.

Tech will not initially offer scholarships for football.

The team is expected to begin competition in 2013-2014 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). It could play its games at perhaps either Palm Bay High or Melbourne High, both of which are about a mile away from Tech’s south Melbourne campus, or Melbourne Central Catholic High located across Babcock Street.

“(Tech President) Dr. (Anthony) Catanese is very pleased for the Board of Trustees support that is making football possible at Florida Tech,” university spokesman Wes Sumner wrote in an e-mail news release.

Update on the FIT Football project…

============================================================
==============================

Catanese said he made the same promise to his Florida Tech students that he did to the FAU student body, that he would not take a single cent from tuition to fund the sport.

"The reality is that football is the most expensive collegiate sport. That's just the way it is," he said. "So, I've had to concentrate on fundraising to get the program going. We're going to raise the money, we're going to go to the community, we're going to charge for tickets, we're going to ask for sponsors and we're going to make this work without cutting into tuition."

Catanese figures $1 million should get the program on its feet and he's just about there. Of course, that dollar figure does not include a stadium or practice facility. For now, the team will play its home games at nearby Palm Bay High School and likely practice at Melbourne Central Catholic.

To date, the program has $400,000 in commitments from area corporations and $600,000 from alumni. Catanese is looking for 12 Florida Tech graduates to pony up $100,000 apiece forming a Founders Club.

Florida Tech's boss plays it smart when it comes to football

$1 million for the program and another $60,000 for a new car…that corvette has to be getting old.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Haha! I was thinking the same thing

"Catanese said he made the same promise to his Florida Tech students that he did to the FAU student body, that he would not take a single cent from tuition to fund the sport." No he'll just use it to buy himself a new 'vette instead

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

That's cool, I say anyone gets FAU a cool $1M should get a $60K car that leaves $940K more than we had for the school, or program!

Incentives work, offer an good incentive package to a fund raoiser or firm and the AD who is hired and we will see the money cause that is how they will make theirs! If they get rich, good for them and BETTER FOR FAU!

Re: Florida Tech is 'ready for some football!'

I just have this feeling like even though the pitch was to bring another Division II football school into Florida (because there aren't many), Catonese and Florida Tech will want to be Division I in the next 5-10 years. Which is fine as long as we're not really competing for the same recruits at that point. If we're in the Sun Belt and they join the Sun Belt…

Anyway, found this in case anyone like me was trying to keep track:
