Recruit: Tommy Tuberville left dinner with Texas Tech prospects

Tommy Tuberville's exit from Texas Tech to accept the head coaching position at Cincinnati caught a lot of people off guard, but few were as surprised as Devonte Danzey, a Texas Tech prospect from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College.

Danzey, along with two other prospects – lineman Sunny Odogwu and receiver Javess Blue – and "eight to 10" coaches went to dinner last weekend as part of Danzey's official visit to Texas Tech. Tuberville was included in the group, but according to the offensive line prospect, the former Red Raiders' coach did not finish his meal with the group.

"The waitress brought our food out, and we thought (Tuberville) went to the bathroom, but he never came back to dinner," Danzey told 247Sports.com. "The next thing I know, the next day, he made an announcement that he's going to Cincinnati."

Danzey also said that Tuberville did not show up for his campus tour the next morning, which is when offensive line coach Chris Thomsen – later named the interim head coach – told the prospects that Tuberville was set to become Cincinnati's new head coach.

I don't know if this is true, but if it is then all I can say is WOW! Petrino may have competition for the most despicable person in college football right now

Tubs is an asshole and mostly fires OC's or DC's annually and blames all that is wrong on them, check out his record regarding this at both Auburn and TT. What a POS!

I guess it's the business.

Tuberville is one of the nicest coaches I have ever met and a great guy. He's set to become the president of the American Football Coaches Associations this year.

I guess it's the [ugly side of the] business.

Exactly…

But still a personal choice to handle it the way it was handled.

Definitely ugly. Malzahn is getting crap (and deservedly so) because he won't coach ASU in their bowl game… but he'll watch it from the stands. Douchebag move, IMO. Honor your commitment to your team and finish the job you were paid to do.

I don't have an issue with him leaving to go to Cincinnati, like you said, nature of the business. I have a problem with the way he handled it. Nice guy or not, be a man and finish the dinner. You don't owe an explanation to the recruits but owe one to your staff and your school. He could have finished the dinner and the next day announced he's leaving to go to Cincinnati and no one would have a problem with it

We are all put in bad positions when we are leaving one job for another, whether you are a coach for a DI team or an executive for a local business.  You choose how you want to handle it and the people you have worked for and with,  and that was a pathetic way to handle it.

As stated above, go back to dinner. You aren't obligated to say anything. Finish your commitments in the morning then go speak to the AD and make the announcement.  It's not that hard not to be a jerk it just might take a little more effort than just walking out of dinner.

GO OWLS!
