This is a pretty good example of what is wrong with college sports. Pretty much every athletic program in the country does not make money. These "arms" races with facilities has really perverted the real purpose of what college athletics. In the NFL each team has borrowing limits. Part of the reason the Dolphins are asking for the money to reonovate the stadium (besides corporate greed) is that they are at their borrowing covenant limit. They are fully leveraged. It would be nice if all NCAA institutions would self impose borrowing limits and be responsible. Maybe actually give money back to their institution.
That and this BS with the college Coaches holding the U's hostage and wanting a new bigger contract every year. UGA may lose DC Grantham the the NFL Saints - OR - they way give hime more money to stay. To me it ia like the kid's if you want to look around and get outside offers and then ask me for more cash - I would say don't let the door hit you in the back - there are hundreds (no THOUSANDS) of other FOOTBALL Coaches out there - we are NOT TALKING ROCKET SCIENCE or LIFE SAVING SURGERY here! A MILLION $$$ a year for an assistant football Coach (or $2-5 M a tear for a HC) is rediculous!

I have always wondered what happens to a school's stadium when they can't pay the bills? (obviously not directed towards UT, I've just always wondered how that would work)

The coaching carousel is definitely a big problem, I think it mentioned in the article that coaching buyouts took up a big chunk of change. Everyone wants the "newer, bigger, faster, better" coach and no one seems to realize (or just don't care) that you can't sustain any business when your paying people to leave while paying a new coach a bigger salary. Look at USF for example, they had just signed Holtz to a 5 year contract, and then immediately fired him and picked up Taggert. Better move for the team , but that is a horrible business decision financially. Then throw stadiums and everything else on top of that.

I beleive they always end up paying the bill, just it ends up the U's problem in spending school monies on athletics facilities and programs in the RED!
