We've talked about whether college athletes should be paid a stipend and the further division it would create between the haves and the have nots, particularly during recruiting.

But how do you guys feel about cases like this (further elaborated here) where the athletes claim they should be compensated for using their likenesses to sell video games?

That one I totally agree with! It might be a small amount, but they deserve something for an outside company making money off of their efforts and likenesses.

School should make money off of it.  Not the players.

To the argument that college programs generate revenue so they should be paid…my high school generates revenue.  Should they be paid?  When does it stop?  Get to the NFL and then make your money.

I have a better idea…get your degree…then make your money.  If you are fortunate to make it to the NFL, good for you.  But your plan should be to get an education and then find a job.  Somewhere along the line it has been forgotten that you don't HAVE to play college sports AND you do get a scholarship if you have the talent to play.

Think about the lawsuit that will be filed if they decide to pay football and basketball players.  I am not an expert, but I am pretty sure Title IX has something in it about fair and equal treatment…what happens when you don't pay the girls?  I think it would be impossible to pay every college athlete.  I am fine with a scholarship as compensation.  I wish I had a scholarship when I was in college.

That's a fair question but they might be able to successfully argue that only the ones who have their likenesses portrayed in games deserve a cut. It's not like our softball, soccer or track teams are showing up in video games (that I'm aware of)

I do remember an NCAA Baseball game that survived one year and are they still making the NCAA basketball games? I'd guess it's too dificult to keep up with the 1 and done players in Bball.
