US Cellular Arena - ASHEVILLE, NC

If Asheville NC can have this why can't FAU/Boca Raton - a development like this needs to get done - in conjunction with a Hotel on that SE corner of campus for highway visibility should be a viable project to me!!!! A medium size Arena/Convocation Center/Convention Center (7500 seats capacity that can be used for conventions as well).

Good stuff.  Would be awesome to see the proposed deal with Related go through (where you're referring to).

I am from that area, and the US Cellular Center for DECADES was simply the Asheville Civic Center.  I get what you are saying in that having a facility for hosting events and having naming rights can be a great thing, but I have spent enough time in that building with SOCON basketball tournaments to Tough Man contests to high school all-star games that I know you will want a much nicer venue.

I know the idea is sound, and a new building is going to be a new building (and way nicer than what they have in Asheville).  So yes - I think it would be a good thing if pitched correctly as a multi-use/multi-event venue.

The main issue with a civic center in Boca is that being in south Florida it's not worth it.

There are tons of arena's, concert venues etc down here. I remember when the stadium was going to have concerts and tons of other events yet it's really only had a few international soccer games.

If a band comes down here there is an arena in Broward they can play, a venue in WPB. Mizner even already has a small venue. So if we build a 7-8k arena tell me what is going to fill outside of some FAU basketball?

The unofficial word on the street is there is an agreement between the City of Boca Raton and FAU that they won't hold major events on campus/stadium until the express lanes to I-95 are complete.  The city is worried about controlling traffic.

Don't know how true this is but it makes for a good talking point.

The power requirements for a rock concert are far greater than that for a sporting event at the stadium. There is a substation proposed on land (FAU leases?) in the NE corner of I-95 and Spanish River Blvd. It's Item 34 on the current master plan. That's more of an issue for concerts than is traffic. It is one thing for the stadium to be ready to handle the necessary electrical load, but another for FPL to be able to provide the voltage. Until FPL is ready, the only way we're going to have a concert is to fill the north parking lot full of generators.

The three-phase line that feeds the police department and hospital runs along NW 5th Ave. I imagine the substation will wait until the construction is done, and then feed from that line. BTW it great grid. I bought a transformer and dug a trench from our house to that line, and FPL connected it up. During Irma, we were without power for 3 hours, and the rest of our neighborhood was without power for over a week.
