Good showing by the Cajun's, even if they came-up short against a top 25 team.

Yeah, exactly!

ULL loses by 3 to #24 in the nation… close!
MTSU also loses by a single TD to Kentucky… also impressive!

The Sun Belt may be a lot more rough this year…

As an aside, anyone notice that CUSA team East Carolina is #14? Not surprised considering their marquee wins recently but still… that's awesome!

Re: Around the Belt: Sept 13th.

Its really a shame that the Sun Belt is getting close but no cigar…if MTSU had won this week, ULL this week, Arkansas St this week, FAU this week, the Sun Belt would have gotten headlines.. not to mention the close ULM game last week against Arkansas.

This week the Sun Belt was:
2 wins
4 close (2 B10, 1 SEC, 1 CUSA)
1 loss

Thats really not bad…the belt could easily have been 6-1 this week ( I dont include WKU since they arent official yet)

I think the Belt schedule will be really difficult with every team but FIU and NT…all of them are competing with big boys

Re: Around the Belt: Sept 13th.

It is obvious that the talent gap is closing between mid-majors and BCS conferences.  There will always be the elite teams… I don't see any SBC school close to competing at the level of say USC, LSU, UF, Texas, or Ohio State(yes, even after laying yet another egg on a big stage last night) yet, but mid-major programs are right with teams in the bottom half of the BCS conferences.  If teams like Boise State and Hawaii can get to BCS bowl games, there is no reason why a SBC  team can't(preferably FAU, of course :) ).

Re: Around the Belt: Sept 13th.

Kind of reminds you of the 100+ year SEC schools 40 years ago. Get rid of the BCS and you will see tremendous changes in college football especially in the Belt. A very big attraction to the "Big Boys" is the potential of being with a National Champion Team. How lopsided is that? :P

I have heard that the NCAA cut down on the number of scholarships for 1-A programs. The result is that many of the top teams are losing good players that would fill out the bottom of their rosters simply because they don't have enough scholarships. The result is that those guys go to "second-tier" schools and end up being solid contributors. I suppose the same thing funnels down thru all levels so many 1-AA programs get guys that would have been SBC, CONFUSA, MAC, WAC, recruits, etc. For that reason the talent is more evenly spread across the board. Any thoughts on this??

I think the SBC will be much more competetive this year. I don't know if FAU has the chops to run away with the title. It is definitely going to be an interesting season.

I hate to say this, but I think MTSU is the team to beat in the Sun Belt this year.
