MTSU Offensive Coordinator Willie Simmons Resigns

Announced last night per a Middle Tennessee release, Blue Raider offensive coordinator Willie Simmons has resigned his duties with the school's football program.

"I have resigned my position as offensive coordinator and running backs coach effective immediately for personal reasons," Simmons said. "I feel this is in the best interest for me and the athletic department at Middle Tennessee. I need to focus on my personal matters and allow (head coach Rick Stockstill) to begin the process of moving his team forward. I love those players and want to wish them well."

Public records indicate that Simmons was arrested and jailed on Wednesday behind an aggravated assault charge brought forward by a private citizen.

Simmons was released on bond shortly afterwards.

"I would like to thank Willie for his service and effort that he has given to Middle Tennessee State University and this football program the last five years," Stockstill said. "I have known him since 1997 when I started recruiting him at Clemson University. He is like a son to me and I will continue to support him through this difficult time in his life."
