March 20, 2004
FAU Campus -
More than 65 runners donned Florida Atlantic University football uniforms as the team sent the defense to the FAU Jupiter campus and the offense to the Davie Campus at lunch time Saturday. The mission was to run nearly 50 miles back to campus in a unifying effort. The squad ran two-by-two along A1A and met FAU President Frank T. Brogan at Spanish River Boulevard for the final leg of the trip.
With a brief stop at the Eleanor Baldwin house to celebrate with the fans who gathered, a full squad sprinted across the FAU campus to an awaiting drum core led by head coach Howard Schnellenberger.
The entire squad, along with cheering guests and drummers, were assembled in the foyer of the Oxley Center for a greeting and congratulations by Schnellenberger.
Schnellenberger extended a special thanks to the Broward and Palm Beach Sheriff's departments who helped coordinate the run. He also presented a trophy cases, located in the lobby, which encased gifts brought back from each of the seven FAU campus, on Wednesday. Gifts included a propeller from the record setting FAU human powered submarine, a t-shirt with signatures from every student on the campus, one of the first banners flown with an FAU insignia, a coffee cup from, a photo from the Port St. Lucie campus and an Owl with 99 footballs placed as feathers to account for every player on the squad. The team presented a panoramic photograph to each of the seven campus on Wednesday.
"Much of the football team's support comes from individuals who attend or have attended the FAU satellite campuses," said Schnellenberger. "Our football team wants to extend a special thanks to all fans in south Florida, but especially those on our sister campuses, by making this run a symbolic event that solidifies how strongly we feel about their support."
Spring Practice will begin 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
