I think dropping Owls would be a huge mistake. It's a good, traditional name, fitting with campus. Rice and Temple have had success with it. It is sufficiently distinctive to stand out. It is not offensive ) in the way of certain Native American names). It represents a critter with legendary wisdom – and isn't learning and wisdom worth something on a university campus that aspires to greatness? (Does the collegiate football world need another team named Tigers, Lions, Bruins, Wildcats?) I recall one of the old suggestions to supplant Owls: Titans. Yikes! That's corny, and it says utterly nothing about the university or its locale.
Heck, they would be better off borrowing the nickname from Seabreeze High in Daytona Beach: the Sand Crabs. (I can hear the opposing coach's pregame exhortation now: "Gentlemen, let's get out there and get the Crabs…." Actually, that might work for Colorado.)
Don't like that one? How about something more representative of the area of the main campus? A few come to mind:
1. The Deed Restrictions (what could be more 'Boca'?).
2. The Overpriced Houses (will work for eterinity here).
3. The Traffic Jams (a photo of Glades Road would be work with this).
4. The Sunny Beaches (with a slight change in enunciation, this could be delightfully off-color and the source of an interesting college drinking song).
5. The Tuition Climbers (the Legislature and governing council will ensure that this does not go out of date).
6. The Brogans (as in, ahem, shoes).
7. The Cruisin' Commuters (with a helmet logo in an interstate highway shield).
8. The Invisible Fans (a no-brainer, right?).
9. The Name Changers (next time someone wants to change it, the helmets could stay the same).
10. The Apathetic Avengers (after all, apathy is the only bond between most students and alums, right?).
11. The Corvette Solicitors (need I say more?).
12. The Big Sandys (initials would make a great helmet logo).
13. The Schizos (would represent the identity crisis felt by some; under this scheme, one side of the helmet could be red, the other blue).
Leave it to meddlers (I believe they prefer to be called marketers) to do all within their power to drive off the few loyal alums the program has. As best I can tell, they have stuck with the program despite the bumbling efforts of those who would 'fix' things to their liking.
Is it too late to get a refund on season ticket and Owl Club money?

I don't like the idea of change the name either. I remember saying to myself what seems like a long, long time ago - "Owls" what a stupid mascot for a school, oohh so intiminating and then in my old age I have grown fond of the "Owls" or should I say "Fighting Owls".
Looking at all the Mascott for D-1AA, D-II, D-III and even some D-1A schools, "Fighting Owls" isn't all that bad actually better then most out there.
I like the Winged FAU Logo, I like The "Burly Owl" Football has, I Like the agrressive prowling Owl we have. They just need better and a larger selection of merchandize.
If they where going to change the Identity of the school they should have done it before the Football team started playing there fisrty game.

The consensus opinion was that yellow/gold had to go. FIU and UCF already have yellow/gold as a primary or secondary color, and it just doesn't go with blue or red really. It was funny when one of the older ladies told us the story how yellow/gold became a part of the color scheme at FAU.
Apparently, a company asked FAU if they could make them a logo cushsion as a sample of their retail merchandise. The company decided that blue and grey weren't exciting enough, so they added yellow/gold just to spice things up. Someone at FAU liked it so much that they decided to add it to the official colors!
I would love to back to the colors that were around when I first went to FAU, silver/grey and navy blue. They were very regal colors. I don't know if anyone has seen the Padres these days, but they have incorporated those colors into their scheme and it looks great.
As for changing the mascot, the Owl is here to stay I think. No-one wanted to change it on our panel, and everyone agreed that baseball should be the Owls also. I would like to see them keep that Blue Wave logo somewhere on the uniforms, but they need to be the Owls too.
The official FAU seal was also discussed, and everyone had differing opinions on that one. I like the seal, but the colored version is ugly.

Quick trivia: FIU's old mascot - The Sun Blazers :-/ Ugh!
We've been known as the Golden Panthers and had our logo/mascot changed just before getting a football team and it has worked out well for us!
