LOUISIANA-MONROE

INSIDE SLANT
The Indians got a glimpse of the future of the Sun Belt Conference last week when they rallied to beat Florida International, which will join the league next season.

The future is actually now for UL-Monroe, which will play at Florida Atlantic this week in a designated conference game. FAU, which also will join the league next season, is 5-0 and owns victories at Hawaii and at Sun Belt members North Texas and Middle Tennessee.

"Florida Atlantic has a very fine football team," said ULM coach Charlie Weatherbie. "They're undefeated and this is their first home game of the year. We know its going to be a challenge, but it's a conference game and a very important game."

The Indians (2-4, 1-1) are coming off back-to-back wins for the first time in five years. Winning a third straight is a must, Weatherbie said.

"There is no doubt about it," Weatherbie said, "that it's a must-win situation. I can see anyone winning our league with two losses, so it's a must-win game … one that we've got to find a way to win."

If the Indians can pull off what would be considered an upset Saturday, it will set up a showdown with three-time defending Sun Belt champion North Texas week.

NOTES, QUOTES
SCOUTING THE OFFENSE: The Indians average just 15 points a game, which is surprise considering they have talented skill players. However, a young offensive line has struggled at times, and ULM simply hasn't been consistent. ULM has won two straight games, though, and the offense is improving. The running game needs to improve, which will help the passing game that features a solid quarterback in Steven Jyles and talented receivers.

SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The Indians are playing good defense, which was expected because they return nine starters. Stopping the run and putting pressure on the quarterback will be a key this week at Florida Atlantic.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I don't think they flinched. You don't want to fall behind like that but I like the way our players fought." ? ULM coach Charlie Weatherbie, referring to the Indians rallying fro a 17-0 deficit to beat Florida International last week.

STRATEGY AND PERSONNEL
THIS WEEK'S GAME: Louisiana-Monroe at Florida Atlantic, Oct. 23 ? Florida Atlantic has already defeated Sun Belt foes North Texas and Middle Tennessee on the road. This is a designated conference game for ULM and will certainly be a most difficult test for the Indians.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: QB Steve Jyles ? The junior is coming off a huge game against Florida International in which he threw for more than 300 yards and two scores and ran for another. Jyles has thrown for more than 1,110 yards this season but needs to be more accurate.

WR Drouzon Quillen ? The junior has just 19 catches, but good things happen when the Indians throw in his direction. He averages more than 20 yards a catch and has four TD catches this season.

ROSTER REPORT: Freshman DT Micah Boudreaux won his appeal to the NCAA and was declared eligible to play this season. … WR Drouzon Quillen, who missed last season with an ACL tear, is back and is averaging more than 20 yards a catch.. … Senior OL Josh Wade was awarded another year of eligibility. He missed last season because he was attacked in an act of random violence and suffered a skull fracture. He is starting at offensive guard.
