Doherty visits FAU

That's right folks, Matt Doherty, everyone's favorite former UNC coach was on campus Wednesday touring the facilities at FAU. Anyone still want to bring in a Big East assistant?

Got some spare cash lying around Talon? We may need it. How about we all chip a few grand for to Mr. Doherty's salary?

Can't help with the cash….two more years before I make any money.

But that would be an amazing hire….even if he only lasted a year or two, that along with the conference move could help make our school more of an attractive job in the future.

Doherty front-runner for FAU opening

BOCA RATON ? Matt Doherty, who recruited most of the players on the North Carolina team that won this year's national championship, is now a leading contender for the men's basketball coaching position at Florida Atlantic.

Doherty, 43, who was Tar Heels' coach for three years before resigning under pressure after the 2003 season, was at FAU on Wednesday, touring the campus and meeting with Athletic Director Craig Angelos and President Frank Brogan.

Angelos said Doherty, who was a star player at North Carolina and helped the Tar Heels win the 1982 national championship, was the last of the finalists to be interviewed. "I have to sit down with the president and decide where to go from here," Angelos said.

Doherty's name had not surfaced before Wednesday, the day after Buzz Peterson decided to take the job at Coastal Carolina. Peterson also had been scheduled to visit FAU on Wednesday, but late Tuesday he accepted the Coastal Carolina offer.

Peterson also has strong ties to North Carolina and was on the same team with Doherty that featured Michael Jordan and won the 1982 national championship.

Georgia Southern coach Jeff Price was thought to be the front-runner after Peterson dropped out, but Doherty's appearance changed that.

Price, who is 102-37 in his six years as coach at Georgia Southern, started the basketball program at Lynn University in Boca and was 135-43 in six seasons there.

Price was on campus Tuesday and interviewed with Brogan. Price has recruited heavily in Florida while at Georgia Southern, and nine of the players on this year's roster were from Florida.

Doherty also recruited in Florida, and West Palm Beach's Jackie Manuel was one of his first recruits. Doherty, who was making $855,000 a year at North Carolina, would be taking a big pay cut if he comes to FAU, which is offering $140,000.

Doherty was 53-43 in his three years at North Carolina. He coached one year at Notre Dame, when the Fighting Irish went 22-15, and was an assistant under Roy Williams at Kansas for seven years prior to that. Williams succeeded Doherty as coach at North Carolina.

BOCA RATON ? Florida Atlantic's list of serious candidates for its basketball coaching vacancy now includes former North Carolina coach Matt Doherty.

Doherty, who is a TV analyst after resigning from UNC after the 2002-03 season, was on Florida Atlantic's campus Wednesday to interview for the men's basketball vacancy.

Matt Doherty coached at Notre Dame and North Carolina.

Doherty toured the campus and met some members of the team late Wednesday afternoon.

"He stuck his head in on a meeting we were having," senior center Robert Williams said. "That was pretty cool."

Doherty, who played at North Carolina, is 75-58 in his four-year coaching career, which includes a year at Notre Dame.

While FAU would benefit from the exposure of hiring Doherty, it is believed he is asking for a salary significantly higher than what the school is offering.

The official job posting with the FAU employment office lists a salary range of $125,000 to $140,000.

Doherty wasn't the only candidate to interview Wednesday.

Former Brigham Young coach Roger Reid was on campus in the morning.

Reid was 152-77 as coach of the Cougars from 1989-96, and was a Cougars assistant when FAU Athletic Director Craig Angelos played baseball at BYU.

Two other candidates, Georgia Southern coach Jeff Price, who also coached at nearby Lynn, and Norfolk State coach Dwight Freeman, who was an assistant at Miami under Leonard Hamilton, were interviewed Tuesday.

It's not clear if any other candidates will interview in person.

While Angelos hasn't commented on any particular candidate, he said the search could be winding down.

Angelos said by today he would meet and compare notes with President Frank Brogan, who is also on the search committee and has met with several of the candidates who were on campus this week

"Everything will be put into the pot, mixed around, and contemplated," Angelos said.

Former Tennessee coach Buzz Peterson, who was to interview on Monday with FAU but decided not to come, officially became the new coach at Coastal Carolina on Wednesday.

FAU fired coach Sidney Green last month after his third consecutive losing season.

I grabbed this piece from the Providence Journal (Providence, RI):

Double dribbles

After several years of welcoming new coaches into the conference, the Big East should remain intact on the coaching front entering next season. The only exception may come at DePaul, which joins the league in June. Dave Leitao, who just completed his third season in Chicago, has had conversations with representatives from the University of Virginia. No job offer has been made but Leitao could make a big financial score with a move to the ACC . . . The Big East still is buzzing about Rutgers hiring assistant coach Fred Hill away from Villanova. Hill, one of the top recruiters in the East, reportedly will be paid more than $200,000 to help shore up Gary Waters' talent base with the Scarlet Knights . . . Longtime Syracuse associate head coach Bernie Fine is a finalist for the head-coaching job at Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla.

Bernie Fine is my second choice, but Doherty is my obviious first. This is the rare opportunity to get a job search completely right. Doherty would bring the men's hoops program instant credibility. I think you will see a drastic increase in attendance (which wouldnt take much considering our dismal numbers this past year), much higher level of recruiting, and a place on the national map. Money is the only thing from being done right now. $140,000 is quite a paycut for this guy, but this could also be his best option. Angelos, make him a wink-wink offer that the money will be there later on if he takes the job ;). Just get this done!!

The "wink, wink" may be the way to go. :D

Matt has to understand that we don't have a lot of money right now. I'd guess that he knew that BEFORE he took this trip to Boca. That leads most to assume that he's willing to work with us. Unless he's using our interview process to keep his name out there. :(

I know his name brings credibility but hopefully Matt will consider that he has worked as a HC for 4 years and we both(FAU) can use this opportunity to grow and expand our resume.

Then he'll be reasonable and except the current offer along with future incentives and football tickets.
