FAMU's Ben Dougherty signed with the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL last Saturday.

CALGARY, Alberta - Calgary Stampeders' Senior VP of Football Operations/Head Coach, Tom Higgins, announced last Saturday (June 4) the free agent signing of former Florida A&M quarterback Ben Dougherty.


Terms of the contract were not disclosed, per Canadian Football League and club policy, but Dougherty is the number two quarterback for the Stampeders as training camp continues.


Calgary has an exhibition game scheduled for June 16 against the British Columbia (B.C.) Lions, who feature another former FAMU quarterback, Casey Printers, who was the 2004 CFL Offensive Player of the Year.


The Stampeders open their regular season on July 1 against the Toronto Agronauts.

College

Dougherty finished his career at Florida A&M, with the all-time best completion percentage (62.4) and ranked fourth all-time in passing yardage (5,231). He completed 477 of 764 passes in three seasons at FAMU (2002-04); tossing 32 touchdown passes against 20 interceptions. He also rushed for 1,016 yards and 14 TDs during his career, highlighted by a 700-yard, eight (8) TD season on the ground in 2003.

While at Florida A&M Dougherty was coached by Billy Joe who has also taught some familiar names: Oteman Sampson (Calgary, CFL - 1999-01; San Francisco, XFL, 2002), Jose Laureano (1999 - CFL), Pat Bonner (Tampa Bay, NFL - 1999); JaJuan Seider (San Diego, NFL - 2000), Quinn Gray (Jacksonville, 2002-present) and Casey Printers (British Columbia, 2003-present).
