FAU TEACHING AND LEADERSHIP CENTER AWARDED $1.9 MILLION GRANT
The School Board of Broward County, through the FAU Teaching and Leadership Center, has
been awarded a $1.9 million ?No Child Left Behind Transition to Teaching? grant to be funded
over three years by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant will support a Transition to
Teaching program with the goal of recruiting mid-career professionals and recent college
graduates to teach in Broward County's high need schools. This project streamlines the
district's hiring, placement and new staff support systems for alternative certification candidates
by creating a one-stop center for all alternative candidates seeking information, training and
support. For more on this story, visit

RACES
FAU's Human Powered Submarine Team recently returned from the Eighth International
Submarine Races at the Surface Warfare Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where it placed
second overall and won the title of most efficient team. The team also beat its own record for the
fastest time, clocking in at 6.1 knots. The team used the 15 year-old FA U-Boat at the
competition, where each team was given the task of developing a one or two-person "wet"
submarine, which floods upon submersion. "The International Submarine Race is a great
opportunity for FAU engineering students to put theory into practice," said Travis Steeves, pilot
for this year's team. "Having the opportunity to compete and share information with other ocean
engineering enthusiasts from around the world is definitely very exciting." For more on this

FAU has filed a U.S. patent application for an invention that optimizes the capture of solar
energy using an array of automatically adjusting high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) cells that can
significantly extend the range of an electric vehicle. Inventors Roger Messenger, an FAU
professor of electrical engineering, and Max Saelzer, an FAU graduate student, used a golf cart
as a potential application for their invention. The PV array mounted on the cart automatically
adjusts to the angle of the sunlight for the enhanced capture of solar energy to charge the
onboard batteries. When the batteries are charged and the cart is not being driven, any
additional energy can be used to supply power to external electrical devices such as electric
lawn and gardening tools or a power grid. The PV array can also be used during natural
disasters, such as hurricanes, by supplying energy to an emergency load. Jet Turbine Service,
located in the FAU Research and Development Park adjacent to the FAU Boca Raton campus,
collaborated with FAU on this project. For more on this story, visit
