Bus rides available: FAU home games

The article just confirms what we talked about regarding a Thursday night game. But there's a small sentence which we can't ignore. FREE TRANSPORTATION!

There will be transportation available. Spread the word.

Although the success of Florida Atlantic University's fledgling football program depends upon fan turnout just as much as the team's performance, don't count on students from the Treasure Coast campus to be out in force at tonight's first home game.

"Our students are older, and with families and jobs they can't leave at 3:30 in the afternoon and get back at 1 o'clock in the morning for a football game," said Kelly Gladwish, governor of the Treasure Coast Campus Student Government association.

Instead of making the two-hour trek to Dolphins Stadium in Miami, a group of about 50 students is expected to meet at Duffy's Sports Bar and Grill in St. Lucie West to watch the nationally televised game between the Owls and Oklahoma State, Gladwish said.

FAU must sell at least 60,000 tickets to its four home games this fall to qualify for an NCAA bowl game at the end of the season. About 27,000 students attend the university's seven campuses spread throughout South Florida and the Treasure Coast.

To help spur student attendance, FAU is providing game-day transportation aboard a charter bus for students from the Treasure Coast and Jupiter campuses.

Only four students from the local campus signed up for the first game, according to A.J. Chase, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs for the Treasure Coast campus.

"The rest of the home games are on Saturday," Chase said. "I think we'll get a lot more students going to those games."

University officials promised the free ride this summer after they raised FAU's athletic fees to $13.75 per credit hour, the highest among the state's 11 public universities. Most of the extra money ? about $1 million a year ? will fund athletic scholarships to make FAU more competitive in college sports.

"Our growing athletics program is playing a bigger and bigger role in the life of this university," said FAU President Frank Brogan on Wednesday, during his state of the university address from the main campus in Boca Raton.

"And it will always be accessible to the commuter students."

That's great but hopefully they will actually advertise it to the entire student body. :-/

Transportation. That is like a well kept secret! I wonder how many students actually know about this. It's not too early for the UL Monroe home game to be advertised by the athletic department.
