Post

Anyone sure if we're back practicing or are we just taking this week off with the bye?

At least our coach isn't doing this:

Teams will continue to play away contests.

Oct. 26, 2005

BOCA RATON - Florida Atlantic University is closed and will remain closed through Sunday, October 30.

During closure, teams playing on the road will maintain their schedules, which includes: volleyball, men's and women's cross country and men's soccer. The women's soccer team will train at an alternate location. The men's and women's basketball have also moved to an alternate site until electricity and a structural engineer has had an opportunity to evaluate the FAU Gymnasium, which sustained significant roof damage.

Football will not be able to practice and will reassess its opportunities the first of next week.

Story from the Palm Beach Post -

Eleven show up for FAU practice
By Marcus Nelson

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Thursday, October 27, 2005

BOCA RATON ? For Florida Atlantic kicker Daniel Kennard, a New Jersey native, riding out Hurricane Wilma at his apartment a few miles from campus was an experience he will never forget.

"I was on my porch the whole time watching stuff blow away," said Kennard, just one of a few players on the FAU roster who are not from Florida. "Everybody else there was sleeping, and I just couldn't believe what I saw."

It may have been his first hurricane, but Kennard already is showing the resiliency of a native Floridian.

He was one of 11 players who reported Wednesday to the Tom Oxley Athletic Center, anticipating practice.

Instead, coach Howard Schnellenberger told players to go home and not to report back until Monday ? although they could be asked to come back sooner.

FAU officials are scheduled to meet today to determine when the campus will open. The Owls' next game is Nov. 5 at Troy, and FAU has considered practicing next week in nearby Montgomery, Ala., or in Orlando. The Tom Oxley Athletic Center held up to Hurricane Wilma, but other parts of campus were damaged, and the school is closed until Sunday.

Logistical problems stemming from the lack of electricity, including an absence of ice, inability to watch game film and lack of laundry facilities, would make holding football practice difficult. FAU was willing to try to practice, but not enough players showed up.

Owls assistant coach Kurt Van Valkenburgh said the coaching staff has had trouble reaching some players because of sporadic phone and cellphone service for the players, nearly all of whom are from the South Florida area.

There have been no changes to FAU's schedule, but it's likely the Owls will have to change their 4 p.m. kickoff time for their Nov. 12 game vs. North Texas because of damage to the light towers at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
