Als kick the Ticats
Last-minute field goal seals it
By CP
MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes were given a scare by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but their perfect 5-0 record remains intact.
Damon Duval's 13-yard field goal with 11 seconds left on the clock and four Anthony Calvillo touchdown passes lifted the Alouettes to a seesaw 41-38 victory over the struggling Ticats last night.
"It certainly wasn't our best performance but the good thing was that we found a way to win," Montreal defensive tackle Ed Philion said. "We got the stops at the end when we needed them."
The 1-5 Ticats had tied the game at 38-38 with 4:20 left to play on Brock Ralph's 26-yard TD reception from Jason Maas, who then hit Craig Yeast for a two-point convert.
The Montreal defence had to stop Hamilton once more before Calvillo launched a final drive, highlighted by a 34-yard pass to Ben Cahoon to set up the winning field goal .
Duval has been good on his last 14 attempts.
Cahoon had 11 catches for 151 yards.
The Ticats can take heart in scoring the first second-half TD against the Alouettes defence this season.
"Moral victories don't count," said head coach Ron Lancaster. "We're not here to build manhood or character, we're here to win.
"We dug ourselves a hole at the start of the season and we need to win."
Jeff Piercy, Thyron Anderson, Kerry Watkins and Robert Edwards caught TD passes, while Anwar Stewart scored on an interception for Montreal.
Mike Echols and Jason Goss each picked off a Calvillo pass and ran it in for a TD, Maas ran one in and
Mark Myers booted three field goals
for the Ticats, who have lost 13 consecutive road games going back to last season.
