This has been going on for awhile. The result is that for the past two months there has been no student government president. This is unfortunate since the president is also a member of the Board of Trustees. In the period without a student representative the BoT has already approved significant tuition raises (especially for graduate students).

However, just two weeks before Brogan's tone was decidedly different when he wrote in a memo to Nguyen: "Your denial of presidential authority while using that power and authority, your failure to conduct a re-run election in the time and manner required by the SG policies, and the current dysfunctional state of student government convinces me that the student body at FAU is now being deprived of an effective student government with no representative Student Government President as required by statute and principal."

"Before you chose not to meet with me last week, you appeared confused about your position and articulated that you are 'not really the President. […]Despite your confusion that you are not actually the Student Government President, you have made and continue to make presidential decisions including appointing a Chief Justice, calling University Wide Council (UWC) meetings, and exercising other authorities and privileges reserved solely to the SG President."

Student government has no head

I just read the UP article the other day…..this is ridiculous, and did you see that at the end of the article someone says that even if the run-off election happens again they are going to protest it again because Nguyen said an election date when it wasn't authorized yet….this is craziness.

Elections have been finalized for July 27-28.

Runoff Election Set

All Students:

As you undoubtedly know, there have been some problems with this year?s Student Government elections. Those problems have now been resolved, thanks to the hard work and close cooperation of Student Government officials and Student Affairs staff members. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in the resolution process.

The runoff election for the 2006-07 Student Government presidency will be held on Thursday, July 27 and Friday, July 28. I hope those eligible to vote will participate in this process. Student Government is an important part of the your experience at Florida Atlantic University, providing leadership opportunities for those who seek such responsibilities and giving all students a voice in self-government. At the university level, as at the local, state and national levels, democratic institutions are only as effective as the people who participate in them.

For information on voting, please go to http://sga.fau.edu/elections/.

I hope you will make your voice heard in this important election.

Sincerely,
Frank T. Brogan
President
