Troy's QB

Post

Omar Haugabook, Glades Central. PB Post Offensive Player of the Year in 2003. Went to Dodge City CC in Kansas and threw for over 5,000 yards and 40 touchdowns. Anyone know why we didn't go after this guy? I heard something about a suspect motion, but who knows.

Interest were there. The only thing suspect about his recruitment were his grades. That's why he eventually went JUCO. Plus he's a scrambling QB and wanted to play for a different offensive set. Troy's offense will not lag behind their defense this year as it did in the past.

Another South Florida product who was recruited by FAU, Omar Jacobs Bowling Green / Steelers, was another one who chose to play in a spread offense vs pro set.

Troy's QB

Omar chose Troy over Marshall, Nebraska and a few others. Seriously.

He liked the new offensive coordinator (handled Tim Couch and was OC at Kentucky), who consults with hundreds of high schools that run his offense. Texas Tech has made this offense pretty successful.

Haugabook is Troy's No. 1 QB

NEW ORLEANS - Thanks to a stellar performance in spring practice by former Glades Central quarterback Omar Haugabook, there won't be any battle for that position in pre-season training camp at Troy.

Despite having to learn a new offense, Haugabook already has won the spot, according to Trojans coach Larry Blakeney.

"He won the job as much by what he did off the field as on," Blakeney said Monday as the Sun Belt Conference began its annual media days. "He made all the throws and all the right decisions. He came in and just went to work and learned."

Haugabook, The Palm Beach Post Offensive Player of the Year in 2003, didn't sign with a Division I-A school out of Glades Central and wound up at Dodge City Community College in Kansas.

After being named MVP of the Jayhawk Conference, Haugabook transferred to Troy, signing with the Trojans in February and in time to go through spring drills.

Haugabook threw for 559 yards and six touchdowns in three spring scrimmages.

"After the first week of spring ball it was obvious," Blakney said. "He's our guy."

Pre-season polls: FAU was picked to finish seventh out of eight teams in the pre-season Sun Belt Conference football poll released Monday.

The SBC coaches picked Louisiana-Lafayette, which won a share of the conference title last season, to finish first. Arkansas State, the Sun Belt representative in the 2005 New Orleans Bowl, was picked to finish second.
Florida International was the only team picked to finish lower than the Owls.

FAU sophomore defensive lineman Jervonte Jackson was named to the pre-season All-Sun Belt team.
Pahokee graduate Keyonvis Bouie, a senior linebacker for Florida International, also was named the pre-season Defensive Player of the Year.

The pre-season offensive Player of the Year is Louisiana-Lafayette quarterback Jerry Babb.

Did you hear the latest? Troy might be getting Willie Williams from UM…it seems the fact they play a tough OOC, plus FIU and FAU…plus that he doesn't have many suitors at this time, is getting him close to going there….

Canes LB Williams considers transfer to Troy UniversityBY BARRY JACKSON
[email protected]
Linebacker Willie Williams is in discussions with Troy University in Alabama about possibly transferring there after receiving permission from the University of Miami to do so, a Troy official said Friday night.

Ricky Hazel, the sports information director for Troy, said the school is interested in Williams and that UM on Thursday told Troy it would release Williams from his Miami scholarship to play there. Hazel said Troy defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell has spoken with Williams and those discussions will continue.

''We're working on it,'' Hazel said.

UM spokesman Rick Korch said Williams has not told UM where he will transfer, but that he has been given permission to transfer to Troy, which could give Williams a scholarship.

Williams, who attended Miami Carol City High, could not be reached, but an associate said he has strong interest in transferring to Troy, barring a change of heart.

He would be required to sit out this season, but would be eligible to play in 2007 and 2008. The NCAA has said Williams would need to apply for a waiver to play in 2009.

Players typically must complete four seasons in five years, but because Williams missed the 2004 season with a knee injury, he would be permitted to apply for a waiver for 2009, the NCAA said.

Williams still is on probation for 2004 charges that included setting off hotel fire extinguishers in Gainesville. He would need approval from a judge to transfer his probation to another jurisdiction. His attorney, Paul Lazarus, said last month that ``is usually a matter of routine.''

Troy (4-7 last season) plays in the Sun Belt Conference, which also includes Florida International and Florida Atlantic. Troy's schedule in 2007 includes a home game against Oklahoma State and road games at Georgia, Florida and LSU.

UM would not permit Williams to transfer to any school on Miami's schedule in the next four years. That eliminated Louisville, which made an initial inquiry to UM. Williams also had interest in Fresno State, which said it is not interested.

Williams, the nation's No. 1 linebacker recruit in 2004, wants to transfer for more playing time.

Miami Herald sportswriter Susan Miller Degnan contributed to this report.
