Tough one coming up with Troy coming to town…not the same Troy that last played at FAU while in the TAAC (now the A-Sun)…

Results so far:

Nov 10 @Auburn Lost 68-71 0-1
Nov 12 Loyola-New Orleans Won 87-52 1-1
Nov 18 Rhode Island Won 84-78 2-1
Nov 18 @Weber St. Lost 61-66 2-2
Nov 19 Drake Won 80-75 3-2
Nov 25 SE Louisiana Won 86-84 4-2
Nov 27 @Alabama St. Lost 56-63 4-3
Dec 2 @Bowling Green Lost 69-72 4-4
Dec 8 @Drake Lost 90-102 4-5
Dec 9 @Northern Ill. Won 84-81 5-5

Led by two high scoring guards, they also have a legit threat down low:

O'Darien Bassett Jr G - 20.1ppg, 2.6rpg
Richard Chaney Fr G - 16.0ppg, 7.3 rpg
Cedric Jackson SR F - 11.5ppg, 5.1rpg

Troy has shot .444% from the floor this year so far, and .353% from beyond the arc…their opponents faired almost identical…

Keys to the game once again are strong defensive man to man perimeter play consistent and scoring from Monroe, and Graham…the zone is not going to work against these guys…they will shoot us out of it…they want to take alot of shots - ALOT…if these two are not getting it done do to double teams, etc, someone will have to step up or we will lose this game…

Holley will probably see more time this game, which should help on offense as well…they dont have the size UCF had, so that is a BIG plus for our inside game both offensively on on defense as well…

We'll have to wait and see if we have any "surprise" guests on our roster for that night…

LATEST LINE: TROY -3

Go Owls!!!

Troy dropped the "State' two years ago. Also two years ago, Troy visited FAU while in the A-Sun.

It should be a good game. Troy is 5-5 after defeating Northrn Illinois in the Drake Regency Classic. Troy lost a heartbreaker to Drake in that tourney, after beating Drake in the Top of the World tourney to start the season in Alaska.

College Basketball: Troy opens Sun Belt play

Drew Champlin / Dothan Eagle
December 13, 2006

Eight games into the season, Troy head coach Don Maestri finally got his two best 3-point shooters eligible.

The problem is, he?s now faced with the task of making sure team chemistry doesn?t suffer - just as Sun Belt conference play begins.

Troy (5-5) takes the road for a game tonight at Florida Atlantic (3-5). It?s the first conference game for both teams and the Sun Belt debut for FAU, which moved over from the Atlantic Sun.

The Trojans got 6-foot-6 forward Justin Jonus, a transfer from Birmingham Southern via Alabama, eligible after he sat out a year for transferring, and senior 5-foot-11 guard Boo Ramsey got his grades in order to become eligible.

The duo played for the Trojans in the recent Drake Regency Classic. Troy lost to Drake 102-90 but beat Northern Illinois 84-81 in the third-place game.

Ramsey wasted no time getting back in the flow, scoring 25 points in the opener and six the next night. Jonus scored nine and 11, respectively, and the two combined to hit 15 threes in the two games.

?The positive was Boo and Justin both shot the ball well in the two games,? Maestri said. ?That helped them establish themselves that they should be playing.?

Maestri played an eight-man rotation in the two games, with starting guards Jerome Odem and O?Darien Bassett and starting forwards Richard Chaney, Sammy Sharp and Cedric Jackson.

Jonus came off the bench with Ramsey and 6-foot-8 forward Ralph Jennings. When Odem was out, Bassett shifted to the point position.

Guards Josh Williams and Brandon Hazzard and forward Bernard Toombs didn?t play. Senior forward Jarvis Acker has yet to play this year due to a team suspension.

?It may take us four or five more games to get our rhythm,? Maestri said. ?The rhythm factor you always hope to have isn?t there yet.?

Players, though, haven?t noticed a problem.

?Chemistry is fine because we?re used to practicing with Boo and Justin,? said Jackson, a senior who is averaging 11.4 points per game.

Bassett, a 6-foot-2 guard who transferred from Okaloosa-Walton Community College, leads Troy at 20.1 points per game. Chaney, a senior transfer from Utah, is scoring 16.2 points per game.

?Bassett?s a guy capable of getting 35-40 points on a given night,? Maestri said. ?That probably won?t happen we have such balanced scoring, but he?s been the most consistent.?

FAU, under first-year head coach Rex Walters, recently lost 87-65 at Central Florida. The Owls are 2-0 at home, but have yet to be tested in wins over Florida Memorial and Norfolk State.

Sophomore guard Paul Graham leads the Owls at 16.6 points per game, with sophomore forward Carlos Monroe scoring 15.1 points and pulling down 8.7 rebounds per game.

attendance was decent, slightly better than the opener from my guess. there are hardly any students on campus so it could be better, give it a few weeks. at important times, the crowd got pretty loud which is good.
I only caught the second half of the game so I didn't get to see Monroe's strong play to start, but when he got in in the 2nd, he had two quick fouls and hit the bench. Derek Simmons stood on his head last night, the guy couldn't miss. Paul Graham was playing awesome too and he went down hard. From what I could tell he came down on a guys foot after a layup and rolled his ankle pretty hard. he was not having an easy time getting off the court. the way his ankle rolled it doesn't seem likely to be broken, but I've torn ligaments doing the same thing so…fingers crossed. Jeff Parmer was good on the boards last night too, he seems to be toughening up a bit. the team came together and played really well last night, bring on the Tar Heels!

Now for the really bad news…
I heard from a good source last night that the rumor around the Athletic Dept is that Carlos Monroe did not have a very good semester and he could be ineligible for the spring. I don't know if they are waiting for grades to be officially posted or if he has an appeal process to go through, but if it's true, our season just got a lot harder. Can anyone confirm or deny?
