Trojans Rally in Second Half to Pick-up First Conference Win

BOCA RATON, Fla. ? Led by senior Valensia Hairston the Troy University women?s basketball team notched its first conference win of the season defeating Florida Atlantic, 78-63.

Hairston posted 21 points for the Trojans (7-3, 1-0 SBC) as she made nine of 12 free throws against the Owls (1-9, 0-2 SBC). Hairston also pulled down seven rebounds and had four steals. Hairston also set a new career high as she blocked four shots for the first time in her career.

Junior Amy Lewis and sophomore Kylie Morrissy also assisted the Trojans as they put 19 and 15 points on the board, respectively. Lewis was also perfect from the charity stripe as she made all eight free throws. Lewis pulled down five rebounds and two steals.

Morrissy added depth on defense as she pulled down 12 rebounds, seven of which came on defense. Morrissy also had three steals and assists.

The Trojans also had a record night as they shot a school record 38 free throws and attempted 55 free throws.

The record for made free throws was set on Dec. 12, 2000 against Alabama State when the Trojans made 37 free throws. The record for free throws attempted was set twice the first against Stetson (2/22/9 and Centenary (2/22/9 when the Trojans attempted 49 free throws.

FAU?s Mistoria Brown led the Owls in scoring with 11 points followed by Brittney Crenshaw with 10 points. Brown also pulled down 10 rebounds and notched four steals.

The Trojans pulled down 35 free throws which was three less than the Owls who pulled down 38. Troy did get three more on defense with 24 than FAU who had 21 rebounds on defense.

Troy trailed by three at the half, 32-29 and continued to trail by two with eight minutes left in the second. Troy tied the game at 52 with 7:35 remaining and never looked back extending its lead to nine with one minute left in the game.

Troy extended its lead in the final two minutes by making six free throws.

Troy will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 17, when will play host to Florida International in a doubleheader with the men?s team. Tipoff for that game is set for 3:15 p.m. after the men play at 1 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
