Florida Atlantic head coach Rex Walters
played under Tar Heel head coach RoyWilliams
at Kansas in the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.
Walters came to KU after transferring from
Northwestern and scored 1,064 points in just two
seasons as a Jayhawk before being a first-round
NBA Draft pick.
Williams on coaching against his former
player:
"It'll be in some ways very difficult, but I'll look
down at that bench and feel a great sense of
pride because I'm extremely proud of that youngster.
I had a player in high school that I did not
coach, but she was on our girls team. She played
tennis, and at that time it was boys and girls. Her
name was Mary Ann Myers. She's one of the
toughest competitors I've ever seen. The other
three toughest competitors that I've ever coached
would be Michael Jordan, Rex Walters and Raymond
Felton.
?Rex Walters made so many big shots for us
and looked forward to taking them. The bigger
the shot, the more he wanted it. He was a youngster
that was playing at Northwestern and leading
their team in scoring, but they were losing.
He wanted to be on a winning team and transferred
to Kansas. I'm not saying it was smooth
sailing because I was tough on him. I was tough
on him, maybe more than anybody I've ever been
around. I can't be any more proud of him. He
played in the NBA for seven or eight years, but
the reason I'm where I am right now is because
of people like Rex Walters.?

Hopefully those kind words translate to Roy refusing to run the score up on one of his favorite players of all time.
I think it may come down to any pre-game talk between Roy and Rex. If I were Rex, I'd be thinking like Howard. I'd want my team to learn what a top team plays like. Its not a conference game. I wouldn't want my team demoralized either so there is a balance. Rex might have asked Roy to stick it to him, but not too much.

I agree with you…Walters flew under the radar a bit…the Doherty thing overshadowed him initially…and some even thought FAU was "settling" by hiring him…i totally disagree…just look at next years recruiting class - the best ever - and do the math…
We are on the rise, there is no doubt about it…and when it is all said and done, folks will have to give credit where credit is do - Rex Walters…
