home game… so we'll all be there tomorrow night, so let's start the conversation now…

SENIOR NIGHT… hopefully something nice and ceremonial will be planned for D and Crews

obviously - it's USA - the best team in the Sun Belt bar none… keys?

  1. Play our game - run, push and motion
  2. Dre and Crews - last regular home game as an owl… go out with dominating performances
  3. Bring down the house - tone of the game is critical… we must dictate the game's flow

There are a few compliments in this article. This is great for a team someone called the worst coached team in D1.

Jaguars seek to rebound against high-scoring FAU
With winning streak ended at 13 games, South Alabama visits Florida Atlantic tonight

The hottest basketball team in the Sun Belt Conference is back in action tonight and for the first time in almost two months, it's not South Alabama.

The Jaguars' 13-game winning streak ended with a 69-67 loss to Florida International on Sunday and now they face a Florida Atlantic team at 6 p.m. today that's playing its best basketball of the season.

The Owls, the league's newest member, have four consecutive wins and are trying to lock down the fourth seed for the conference tournament, which is only a week away.

Florida Atlantic (14-13, 9-7) is one of the league's top offensive teams, averaging almost 75 points a game, and is the best shooting team in the conference at 49 percent from the field.

In their past three games, the Owls have been scary on offense, averaging 87 points in their victories over Florida International (85-78), at Western Kentucky (78-73) and New Orleans (98-77).

In the victory over New Orleans, Florida Atlantic exploded for 60 points in the second half. FAU led at halftime 38-37.

The Owls' high-powered attack will be a challenge for the Jaguars' defense, which broke down in the final 10 minutes of the loss to Florida International.

South Alabama's defense is rated second in the conference, but Florida International managed to score on 15 of its final 18 possessions to overcome a 15-point deficit.

"We have to bounce back," said South Alabama coach John Pelphrey. "We'll regroup and try to get better. That's the whole focus. We'd won 13 in a row, so the chances are you're going to lose one somewhere.

"We were never playing for the streak in the first place. We've been trying to go game-by-game and focus on that. We'll have our hands full with Florida Atlantic. They're terrific on offense."

What makes the Owls so difficult to defend is that they have four players scoring in double figures.

Senior guard DeAndre Rice leads the way with an average of 19.7 points per game. Sophomore forward Carlos Monroe is averaging 18.3 points, sophomore guard Paul Graham 14.2 points and junior forward Jeff Parmer 10.3 points.

Rice and Monroe have had monster games recently. Rice connected on 10 3-pointers and scored 39 points against Troy, and he tossed in 29 points against Florida International.

Monroe, a rugged 6-foot-8, 225-pounder, has turned in three straight double-doubles. He had 30 points and 14 rebounds against New Orleans, 26 points and 12 rebounds at Western Kentucky, and 20 points and 11 rebounds against FIU.

South Alabama won the first meeting with Florida Atlantic 101-76. The Jaguars made 58 percent of their shots that night, had 14 3-pointers, and had five players score in double figures.

The 25-point win at the Mitchell Center on Jan. 6 was South Alabama's best offensive performance of the season, and the Jaguars may need to duplicate it to avoid consecutive losses for the first time since mid-December.

South Alabama returns to the Mitchell Center for its regular-season finale against Troy on Saturday.

I think S. Alabama is going to be suprised to see a different team than the one they beat 101-76. They better hit more than 14 three's if they expect a road win tonight.

GAME NOTES: The red-hot Florida Atlantic Owls will host the South Alabama Jaguars this evening in a Sun Belt Conference tilt from the FAU Arena. The Jags just recently had their 13-game winning streak snapped with a heartbreaking, 69-67 loss to Florida International on Sunday. Despite the loss, South Alabama is still 13-3 in the SBC and has already secured the regular season title. After tonight's game, the Jags will close out their schedule at home against Troy. As for the Owls, they have won four consecutive matchups and are coming off a convincing, 98-77 victory over New Orleans this past Saturday. With the victory the Owls are now a respectable 9-7 in league action. While FAU's season ledger is only a mediocre 14-13, the team's home mark is an impressive 9-2. These two schools met for the first time on the hardwood earlier this season and it was a meeting FAU would surely like to forget. The Jags trounced the Owls by a lopsided, 101-76 score.

Defense has been the name of the game for the Jags all season and although the squad held FIU to just 69 points in the recent matchup, South Alabama still fell to the Golden Panthers by a two-point margin. In the loss, USA limited FIU to a 41.4 percent effort from the field and a 10-of-28 clip from long range, but despite the sound effort at that end of the floor, the Jags' winning streak came to an end. On the season, the Jags are currently surrendering just 65.8 ppg, while holding the opposition to just 42.9 percent shooting from the field. At the other end of the floor the team is being led by Demetric Bennett, who is posting 15.5 ppg, while collecting 5.4 rpg. Ernest Little and Daon Merritt have also made solid contributions, as Little is netting 12.8 ppg and pulling down a team-best 8.7 rpg, while Merritt is averaging 12.7 ppg and 5.6 apg.

The Owls continue to grow offensively and the team took a huge step in its last contest, putting up 98 points on New Orleans en route to a 21-point victory. In the win, the Owls shot a sizzling 60.9 percent from the field and connected on a smooth 50 percent from behind the arc. While the team has picked up the pace tremendously over the past couple weeks, FAU has been solid throughout the season, averaging 74.5 ppg, while shooting an impressive 48.9 percent from the field. DeAndre Rice has been the top option for the Owls and is currently producing 19.7 ppg. Carlos Monroe has been a beast down low for the Owls, as the forward is posting 18.3 ppg to go along with 8.9 rpg. Paul Graham and Jeff Parmer have also proven to be very valuable for FAU, as Graham is netting 14.2 ppg, while Parmer is chipping in 10.3 ppg to go along with 5.7 rpg.

The Owls have played well over the past few weeks, but it will be interesting to see if the team can compete against the top squad in the conference. South Alabama pummeled FAU earlier this season and while the Jags will not repeat that sizeable win, the team should still come out on top.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: South Alabama 84, Florida Atlantic 79
