From ESPN.com
Spring practice is about building depth, and that's exactly what Lousiana-Monroe accomplished at running back. With starter Calvin Dawson returning for his senior season, freshmen Frank Goodin and Tay Ogletree staged a spirited competition for the backup job this spring. Goodin rushed for 77 yards and two touchdowns in the Maroon and Gold Spring Game on Saturday, while Ogletree had an 82-yard touchdown run. The competition likely will extend into the fall. "They both complement one another," coach Charlie Weatherbie told The (Monroe, La.) News Star. "Frank is one of those shifty kind of guys that gets up inside and makes people miss. Tay is one of those guys that is hit and bounce and find an edge to outrun people. Both can be used very well in our system."

Middle Tennessee
Clint Marks is gone, and four men are vying to replace him at Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders' quarterback competition kicked off Monday with the start of spring practice. Joe Craddock entered spring ball as the starter and is the frontrunner to succeed Marks, but Patrick Jackson, Salin Simpson and Gene Delle Donne, a transfer from Duke, are in the mix. Craddock played in nine games last season, completing 9-of-24 passes for 75 yards. "I have an advantage because I've played a little bit," Craddock told The Daily News Journal. "That's the reason I'm starting right now. I feel like it's my job. Since I have it right now, I feel like they're all battling me."

Here is more stuff from the Bulls from ESPN:
University of South Florida
Ready to break out: 1. Tyrone McKenzie, junior outside linebacker. South Florida has no worries about replacing star linebacker Stephen Nicholas. The Bulls have just the man in Tampa native McKenzie, who began his career at Michigan State and transferred to Iowa State, where he was second-team All-Big 12 last season. His 129 tackles in 2006 were eighth-most in the country. He will not have to sit out this season because the NCAA granted him a hardship waiver, based on the fact he wanted to be closer to his mother, who reportedly is ill.
2. Chris Robinson, junior defensive end/linebacker. As a pass-rushing specialist last season, Robinson quietly put up seven sacks. His role figures to increase. So do his numbers.

Florida Gators
The No. 1 priority this spring for the defending national champion Gators was rebuilding a defense that lost nine of 11 starters. Some new names are beginning to emerge. Sophomore linebackers Brandon Spikes and Dustin Doe are off to good starts, and coach Urban Meyer likes the leadership qualities that Spikes, in particular, has shown. A few others who've caught Meyer's eye are sophomore defensive tackle Brandon Antwine, redshirt freshman defensive end Lawrence Marsh, redshirt freshman linebacker A.J. Jones and true freshman cornerback Joe Haden. An early enrollee, Haden has been working a little with the first-team defense. The only starters back from last season's defense are senior safety Tony Joiner and junior defensive end Derrick Harvey, who led the Gators with 11 sacks. While Florida won't be as big or as experienced on defense next season, Harvey thinks the Gators will be faster. A good sign for the defense is that it's won both of the scrimmages to this point, including the goal-line scrimmage Saturday. Meyer was happy with the way the defensive line performed in that scrimmage, but he was also miffed over the number of fumbled snaps that plagued the Gators on offense. So far, junior Kestahn Moore is working with the first team at running back. Sophomore Brandon James has been his backup, although redshirt freshman Chevon Walker has had his moments.

Minnesota Golden Gophers:
Minnesota's second-half defensive collapse in the Insight Bowl hardly seems the trigger for the development of a positive attitude among Gophers' defensive players. New coach Tim Brewster, however, thinks he can build a swagger in the unit that blew a 38-7 third-quarter lead to Texas Tech in an eventual overtime loss that resulted in then-coach Glen Mason's firing. "I want to help those guys develop an attitude and an edge," Brewster said. "I really think that we are getting that. We use the term swagger – that is a confidence about the way we do things, and I think you are seeing it and it is really fun." ? Minnesota might not win the Big Ten, but the Gophers will finish first at something. They wind up spring drills on April 7, well ahead of other league members, whose spring practice extends an additional two weeks or more.
