Atlantis Astronaut is an OWL !!
" … He called Pat Breman?s office a couple of weeks ago to request an FAU memento to take on the trip with him. She?s having an alumni banner made especially for this purpose. Isn?t it great to know that someone as busy as an astronaut preparing to go into space would want to make his alma mater part of that historic experience? And isn?t it great that his alma mater is Florida Atlantic University? "
How great it would be for Swanson to come and talk to the team. I know Coach S. would enjoy hearing about the space flight. The new Athletic advisor is an Engineering professor. Perhaps he can pull some strings the next time Swanson has to come over to the Cape.
I will be sure to watch the launch. If not in Orlando, on the NASA website where you can watch it live and from my backyard. It should be beautiful at sunset.

FAU GRAD TO LAUNCH INTO SPACE TONIGHT
NASA Astronaut and Florida Atlantic University alumnus Steve Swanson, 46, will be part of the STS-117, the shuttle mission that will add another solar panel to the International Space Station. He is a flight engineer on the mission, which is slated for launch tonight - Friday, June 8 - at 7:38 p.m. Weather forecasts look good for an on-time lift-off.
As an Amercian mission specialist, Swanson falls into the civilian category along with doctors, scientists and other engineers. He will join the shuttle's commander, it's pilot and three other speicialists for the 12-day mission. It will be the United States' 20th flight to the manned space station. Swanson will take on board with him an FAU banner decorated with alumni pins.
A native of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, he finished his undergraduate degree in engineering physics at the University of Colorado in 1983. He earned his master's in applied science, focusing on computer systems at FAU in 1986. That same year, he joined NASA as a systems engineer in the aircraft operations division in Houston, working on a shuttle simulator. Twelve years later, he earned a doctorate in computer science from Texas A&M University. He then applied and was accepted to NASA's astronaut candidate training school.
Tonight, he will finally experience his first space flight.
