Owls Host First Director's Club Reception
Attendees Celebrated 2006-2007 Successes

July 9, 2007

BOCA RATON, FL - Craig Angelos, Florida Atlantic University's athletics director, hosted the program's first Director's Club reception on Thursday evening, June 14. The event gave the University the opportunity to thank a club whose membership has more than tripled in size since the club was founded in 2004.

"We're excited that these individuals have invested in our program," said Angelos. "They are outstanding ambassadors to the community and in some cases have provided meaningful mentorship to our student athletes. The Director's Club enables us to build for the future."

This group supports the athletic department annually, allowing for continued growth. The Director's Club is a branch of the Football Founders, a group of fans who stepped forward to create a football program at FAU.

Angelos addressed those gathered at the event with an update on the many successes achieved by individual FAU athletes and teams. He also thanked the Director's Club for its role in raising more than $80,000 in its first Owl Fund drive.

Peter Baronoff, a Director's Club member, spoke to the group about his experience as a mentor. He also discussed the impact that the student athletes and the university can make in the community.

Dr. Richard Staller, a Football Founder, an original Director's Club member and the President of the Owl Club, spoke of the differences each member could make in the lives of student athletes.

FAU President Frank T. Brogan closed by thanking all who had stepped forward as Director's Club members and spoke of the "college town feel" and common bond a stadium would provide.

Football Founders and current Director's Club members who attended the event included Staller; Fred, Rick and Marvin Steinberg; and Joe Balistreri. Other attending Founders included Erich Sommerkamp, Jim Cummings and Ellie Baldwin. Director's Club members in attendance included Barnoff, Rich Iamunno, John Masor and Matt Shafer. These members were joined by friends of the University, including Ray and Julie Southern and Board of Trustee member Armand Grossman.

Guests were also treated to an unveiling of Owl Water, a product that will go on sale in the coming weeks at area stores. The label features FAU Athletics, as well as the 2007 football schedule.

The next gathering for the Director's Club is scheduled for the fall. For more information on how to get involved, call 561-297-0408.

Cool idea. You'd think FAU would want to post a picture of the product so people know what to look for.

Maybe they can market candy and call it "owl pellets"

All kidding aside, whether owl water is a success or not, someone is thinking of ideas to promote FAU sports and raise money.

I don't think this is any "special" water. Doing a lot of fundraising for marching bands in the past I know of a few companies that will put your logo on a bottle of, well tap water. Then they sell it to you for about 50 cents and you sell it for $1.50….

So class, how many overpriced bottles of tap water do we need to sell to buy an on-campus football stadium?

I hope its not just tap water. Filtered water, maybe. But not just tap water.

That would be a low class, cheap, embarrasement.

It is probably not something that will be on shelves permanently. During the first season of FAU football they came out with limited addition FAU Coke bottles. This might be the same type of thing. 50,000 bottles for fundraising and exposure and that might be it.

GO OWLS!!!
