The missing piece was the football stadium. Like FAU, Akron plays in an off campus crumbling stadium. They have fianlized their commitment to create the college experience ON CAMPUS with today's announcement.

We should have our people call your people, so they can see how to GET IT DONE.

I like the way the hallways for the sky boxes are open so they show the stadium club level below. The huge TV screens are cool, too.
The main building looks a lot like what Troy built. Troy got its ideas from Nebraska (building) and Mississippi State (club level).
One criticism: You all need more club seats. I think Troy has more than 1,000. Four hundred is not enough and limits the school's ability to bring in well-heeled donors.

As for the club seats, there is room for more. Akron's attendance has been very low, so I'm sure that the number was set low so they can sell them all and exceed expectations.
If you look at the north end zone, they are creating a platform that connects the stadium to the $10million indoor practice facility. This platform serves two purposes. One is that it can be transformed into addtional club seats if there is demand (think about what the Marlins did in the outfield when they first arrived - kind of an outdoor table/lounge area). The second is that the platform is actually a foundation which can support additional seats. They can add 5-7k seats to complete a lower bowl in that area as demand warrants

If they can get it done in two years FAU should be able to do the same if we can ever get a vote. At least in So. Florida you can work throughout most of the year whereas winter in Akron will make for slow progress.
Is the Rubber Bowl slated to be torn down or will it remain standing?

It can't be demolished without damaging the home of the soap box derby next door and it also is built into a hill so the road behind it would collapse. It is used now for many high school games but I'm sure those will move to the new field - good idea using synthetic surface to accomodate lots of activities! It is literally falling down - entire bleacher sections removed and roped off, sections of concrete foundation cracking. It probably will be condemned in the not too distant future. A few years back they were looking into renovating it because many thought a new on campus stadium would be too pricey. They found out that there was so much structural work to be done that it would cost nearly as much to build new…that is part of what jump started the on campus plans
