From the Boca Raton News:
http://www.bocaratonnews.com/news/local/120-pechter-family-robitics-brch.php

Snippets:

"Boca Raton residents Jack and Marilyn Pechter and family have made a commitment to establish the Jack and Marilyn Pechter Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery/Robotics at the new Boca Raton Community Hospital. The new facility, to be built on the campus of Florida Atlantic University, will be named the Charles E. Schmidt Medical Center.

The Charles E. Schmidt Medical Center will house six medical institutes: The Eugene M. and Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute; The Christine E. Lynn Heart Institute; The Jack and Marilyn Pechter Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery/Robotics; The Institute for Neurosciences; The Institute for Quality Aging and The Institute for Women’s Health."

What's especially cool about this is that most people believe this kind of minimally-invasive robotic surgery is the future of surgery… although it's not offered in too many places right now, as I understand…

And now FAU's hospital will have it.

I remember reading about the da Vinci robotic surgery in New York and how it made such small cuts that the healing time for prostate surgery was cut in half. Check out for a little more info…

da Vinci Surgery - Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System

Here's another one, called "Going Under the Da Vinci", from Forbes.

Going Under The Da Vinci - Forbes

Key point: "With conventional surgery, patients have a two- to three-day hospital stay and are often kept on a catheter for ten days or more. It typically takes conventional patients two months to get back to normal activities. With the robotic surgery, prostate patients often get back to normal activities within two weeks." Not to mention: "More importantly, some of the early data on da Vinci prostate surgery, such as from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, indicate that patients undergoing the da Vinci operation had a better chance of being cancer free after the operation"

Now, FAU's Institute may not have da Vinci per se but the execution/results should be very similar.

Re: FAU Hospital gets Robotic Surgery Institute

This is good news. Is there anymore news about the delay in building the hospital?

Re: FAU Hospital gets Robotic Surgery Institute

It should be noted that this isn't and won't be "FAU's hospital"

Is it on FAU's campus? Yes.

Does it belong to FAU? No.

Will FAU use it to train nurses, med students? Yes.  But Miami will be the primary students involved.

"FAU's hospital" in the sense that Shands is "UF's Hospital."

Re: FAU Hospital gets Robotic Surgery Institute

No… Shands is affiliated with UF as they have a doctorate program and a series of hospitals as part of their UF Health System entity.  Shands is a part of UF's medical system.

The only affiliation FAU will have with the new BRCH is that its on FAU land and FAU students can utilize its teaching capabilities.

Big difference.

Anyway, I don't think you meant to say that its FAU's hospital but just wanted to clarify.
