Game Thread: FAU vs South Alabama 02-16-08

*LISTENING TO THE GAME*

Here's the script, more or less, for those who are reading this later.

They announced a sellout crowd of 10,000 (…their enrollment is 14,000…) at South Alabama tonight. Apparently it's Homecoming there (in February?) so the alumni are in the house. Apparently it's the second largest crowd that FAU has played before this season (the first being at Kansas). They are loud even before the game has started.

Carlos Monroe is in the starting line but apparently "his ankle is a little tender."

First half:
- Tipoff won by USA but Alacron gets it and the ball gets to Monroe who makes the first score for 2-0 FAU.
- Holding foul on Carlos Monroe at 47 seconds into the game.
- USA gets a 3 pointer. Now 3-2 USA leads.
- Monroe scores again. 4-3 FAU.
- "Ronald Douglas and Carlos Monroe are going at it."
- Jeff Parmer is helping out. 9-6 FAU.
- Carlos Monroe substituted out for Brett Royster. Monroe is "grimacing as he goes to the bench."
- Parmer gets another 3 (12-6 FAU). Douglas responds. 12-9 FAU.
- "Red Hot Owls early on! 17-9! FAU is LIGHTS OUT RIGHT NOW! Owls shooting 87.5% from the 3 right now."
- Parmer has 10 points. Alacron has 3.
- 15:44 left. USA player Daon Merritt poked in the eye. 20 second time-out called.
- Random yelling there at USA. No real organization in chants so far.
- USA scores on Alacron. Monroe back in. Second offensive foul on Monroe and he's back on the bench. 17-12 FAU right now. It's worth noting, perhaps, that USA has only been ahead once so far (by 1).
- Douglas scores again. 17-16 FAU.
- Paul Graham now in. Jags at timeout.
- Alacron switched out for Nwoji. We missed two foul shots.
- Graham misses a 3. USA missed a 3. Royster goes up for it and he was fouled underneath the basketball. Royster goes to the free throw line. The arena got loud. He missed the first one. "Free throws not going FAU's way right now." Royster puts in the second one. 18-16 FAU.
- Douglas goes up for 2. Game is now 18-18. "Owls have no answer for Douglas so far."
- Everybody is chanting "defense." Goal-tending called on Ronald Douglas. Parmer is having a great game tonight; he's got 12 so far.
- USA nails a three. 21-20 USA leads. Ball stolen from FAU. USA leading 23-20. Looks like USA is starting to heat up (or we're starting to slide backwards, however you want to look at it)
- "Owls shooting 80% from the floor, USA shooting 62%."
- Nwoji with the three! 23-23. This is a good game! Wish I could be there. Crowd started to chant "U-S-A! U-S-A!"
- Foul called on Xavier Perkins. Fair game? "South Alabama is a physical team and uh, they certainly get away with a lot."
- USA makes a three. "3-on-1 break, Nwoji puts in a two pointer. 28-25 Jags."
- 3 pointer for Derrick Simmons. Game tied at 28.
- Uhhhh, USA has a player named "DeAndre Ross." Sound familiar?
- Holding foul on Sean Alacron. "As physical as this game is, they're not really calling some of the more aggressive fouls." Sounds like the refs are pandering to the crowd.
- Nwoji makes a 3. Perkins goes for a layup. 33-30 FAU. "Owls certainly got away with a holding call there." If the second half is like this, this is going to be a nailbiter.
- 33-32 USA gets their 2 free throw shots. Sammy Hernandez (!) into the game, perhaps as "another big body to guard Ronald Douglas." Doesn't help – he scores anyway. 34-33 USA.
- Sanchez Hughley goes to the free throw. Nails 'em. 35-33 FAU.
- Ronald Douglas evens it out. Then USA scores again. 38-35 USA leads the Owls.
- USA shot blocked by Sammy! "Good defense thereby Sammy Hernandez." Hernandez takes a 3 and misses.
- I'm reading that in Nov 2007, Vanderbilt only beat USA by 3 in double overtime.
- Owls trail by 1 (38-37) with two minutes left. Royster is triple teamed. Holding Foul called on Derrick Simmons, FAU.
- USA sinks in a free throw. Second free throw is good too. 40-37 USA with 1:25 to go in the first half.
- FAU shoots 42% from the free throw line. The place is loud as hell during our shots. 40-38 USA.
- 41-38 USA leads at 35 left in the first half. Ball out on the Jags… call reversed. "Once again, the refs have changed their mind based on the crowd." Okay, so the Owls head to the half 41-38. "Rex Walters is all over the officials screaming at them for explanations and he should because… just terrible officiating tonight."

41-38 at the half. On the upside, if we lose, we should be fired up to kick FIU's *** on Wednesday.

"When leading at the half, Jags get it 15-1. Won the Sun Belt Conference Championship two years in a row. USA expected a sellout but didn't quite get it here at the Mitchell Center, which they call 'The Jungle' and you can see why. FAU is going to have its work cut out for them if they want to hand the Jaguars their first loss at home."

Second half:
- Here we go. A couple of misses. Carlos Monroe is back. Parmer misses a 3. Sounds like both teams got the "You better go out with fury in the second half." USA scores a bit. 45-40. Xavier Perkins in the game for Sanchez Hughley.
- Offensive foul called on Perkins. Jags score to go up 47-40 USA.
- Nwoji nails a six foot jumpshot. 47-42 USA.
- Ronald Douglas scores to have 18 in the ballgame.
- Monroe gets a rebound, Alacron gets a 3. "Nice three for Alacron!" 47-45 USA.
- Douglas scores a two-handed stuffer. Averages five points on the night going into the game, but in this game he has 20 points. The game is now 51-45 USA. They're pulling away. We need to get back into the game.
- Ronald Douglas has 3 fouls. We get free throws. Now 51-47 USA. Monroe doing well but WHERE IS PAUL GRAHAM?
- Ball stolen from USA by Xavier Perkins. Ronald Douglas and DeAndre COleman, USA's two big guys, both have 3 fouls.
- FINALLY… PAUL GRAHAM. Nwoji to the bench. 55-47 USA with 13:03 to go. FAU not doing so hot now… they're shooting 50% from the charity stripe. They're at 46% shooting percentage, same as USA.
- Here's a picture of the Mitchell Center, btw

Nice looking place, definitely. They're unveiling future plans for a 130-foot-tall Public Bell Tower and having a firework show there tonight… that probabldy drew in some people too.
- A foul finally goes our way. Perkins makes two free throws. 55-49 USA.
- "I hate to say it but the officiating is… not consistent. Things falling away from FAU right now." I muted the sound a second, must have been a score since Owls trail by five.
- USA scores. They have an eight point lead.
- Them vs us, maybe the price reason (in bold) is part of why they have a higher attendance? From their website: "Because record crowds are expected for the games, tickets should be picked up early. Tickets may be purchased at the Mitchell Center ticket office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. General admission to the Lady Jags games is $5 for adults and $3 for teenagers and senior citizens. Children 12 and under are admitted free. At the Jaguar Men’s games, tickets are $12 on the lower level and $5 on the upper level, with $3 tickets for students ages 6-17. Children 5 and under are free."
- "Game is starting to slip away from the Owls right now." Not good. 63-52 USA. Hughley misses. USA drives. Foul on Graham. "I wouldn't be surprised if you see a technical foul somewhere from the FAU bench right now. Rex is walking directly right at the official who made the call while the responsible official is walking the opposite direction. He knows what's going on." Great.
- Free throw shots by USA made. Owls now trail by 13. "A foul is called by South Alabama. Rex Walters stands up and applauds."
- Perkins helps out. USA's lead cut to 10 points. Carlos Monroe steals the ball and Graham scores. Lead cut to 8.
- Daon Merritt puts the lead back up to ten for USA. Paul Graham scores and a fall is called on Daon Merritt. 7:39 to go in the half, Jags lead 67-59. Paul Graham to the free throw line. First one is good. "Interesting… Paul Graham has a left-handed dribble but a right-handed shot." Something happens… Graham gets a foul while make a free throw?
- Tilford for USA brings the lead back to 9. 69-60 USA.
- Tilford off the glass. 71-60 USA. Derrick Simmons loses out, Douglas scores. 73-60 USA. Alacron and Monroe back in, Nwoji and Simmons back to the bench. Graham takes it to the glass and in. 73-62 USA. Push foul called on Alacron. Ronald Douglas heads to the free throw line. USA "were 16 point favorites going into the game."
- "The Owls certainly going to have to make a strong run in the end here to get back into the game." 5:50 to go in the game. Perkins got it off the glass. Xavier has ten for the night. 73-64 USA.
- Tilford makes it, Jags lead is 12. Basically, USA is owning this second half. 77-66 USA with 4:08 to go. Perkins and Alacron to the bench, Perkins and Hughley back in for us. USa makes another free throw. Now 12 point defecit.
- 78-66 USA with about 3:47 left. Jags (Tilford, actually) has the ball. "USA has a very comfortable lead, they're just trying to work the clock right now." Personal foul called on Sanchez Hughley (his 3rd). "Game was a lot closer than this early on, but a lot of mistakes have led to… what looks like the Owls demise here."  :-\
- Douglas has 21 points on the night. Monroe makes some free throws.
- He's not announcing the score very often at all; 2:45 to go in the game. Nwoji gets a three.
- USA's Tilford gets a three. Owls trail by 14 and "get sloppy." The ball is stolen, Coleman makes a shot. "The cream has risen to the top. 89-70 USA and that should be the end for the Owls. Well, the Owls gave it a good effort early on. Really, the problem for a while was Ronald Douglas, a big guy who went down low."
- Lane violation is called on the Owls. Sammy Hernandez checks in with about a minute to go. "Daon Merrick runs the clock out."
- Reserves in, 12 seconds left. This is done. 17 point loss. Bad officiating, the guys fell apart in the second half, the free throws weren't there, the crowd probably freaked them out a bit, etc. They facaed a very good team and I hate to say it but I wouldn't be surprised if this is how the WKU game goes as well.
- In any case… Wednesday. Bury the Burrow in Red. Be there.

GAME OVER:
FAU loses to USA 91-74.
