FAU gets brain boost

FAU also may be forced to cut an estimated 1,800 students, but it's keeping its freshman class numbers stable at about 2,400.
An increase in unsuccessful Gator and Seminole hopefuls could raise the grade-point average in FAU's freshman applicant pool, which grew 15 percent this year to 10,000.

"You could have a student with a 1300 SAT who initially planned to go to FSU, and they said they're not going to be able to take them so they come to FAU," said FAU Associate Provost Mike Armstrong
Looks like we're finally going to HAVE to cut out underperforming students and thus, getting into FAU will be more of an accomplishment. It shouldn't be a minor boost either; from what I'm reading, these capped enrollments could be a fixture as far out as 2012, with tuition increases just covering the students they have to shut out… not to say anything about covering more students than the cap.
This should benefit FAU in ways other than numbers; more motivated students should mean a more active campus life.
In any case, it will be interesting to see how this pans out, even if the article's numbers can't be right… According to FAU's 2007-2008 Quick Facts, we had 11,822 apply in last year's freshman class and 6,698 were admitted (2,677 actually enrolled… about 40% of those admitted).
