Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

Add topic

Post

Cold night has kept the fans away.  But FAU bats remain hot.  9-4 FAU bottom.  Seems like once again, the long ball hurting our pitchers and made things interesting in the early going.

Travis Ozga's hit a 3 run HR…. has he done that in the last 3 games? I'll check that later on.

Not a bad recovery by Morrison, 5 IP 3 hits 4 ER 5 K's… bad part is the 4 BB's, granted the weather.  Either way, better than his last start.

Re: Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

Eastern Michigan elected to pitch to Ozga with runners on 2 and 3.  Oops.

Oz two run single makes it 11-4 top 7.

Re: Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

Wheels come off a little bit, Eberhart allows 2 singles and in comes Melendres.  He walked the first guy, then got two quick outs before giving up a 2 run single to EMU.

11-6 top 8.

Re: Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

Game, set, match. FAU holds on for 11-6 win.

The Good:

- Jeremy Griffiths went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, SB and 2 runs.

- Travis Ozga 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, 3 run HR and 2 runs.

- No errors in the field.

The Bad:

- Daniel Cook struggled going 0-for-5 at the plate, but after last night's grand slam, we can forgive him.  ;)

The Ugly:

- Pitchers combined for 5 BB, 2 HBP, allowed a triple, double and HR.  Got in and out of jams all night.

Eberhart continues to struggle.  2 more earned runs balloons his ERA to 21.60.  We can expect better.

Re: Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

It's early.  Say you allow 2 runs in 1 inning pitched on the season and you're ERA will be 18.00.

Re: Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

i dotn know baseball that well as far as calculating ERA's…is there a "credit" for things like strike-outs that can lower the ERA besides just getting out of innings with no runs??

Re: Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

No, at least not ERA.

ERA is "Earned Run Average", therefore only effected by runs earned per 9 innings pitched.

BUT, there is another stat that calculates what you are asking about, which is referred to as WHIP.  Some coaches would argue this is more important than ERA, but it's not discussed in the same context (i think that's because its complicated).

WHIP:
W= Walks   H= Hits   IP = Innings Pitched

Here's how to figure out WHIP

WHIP = (Walks + Hits) / Innings Pitched (IP)

- Add up all the Innings the Pitcher has pitched, including thirds
- Add up all the hits and walks the pitcher has allowed
- Divide the number of hits and walks by the number of innings pitched

Take Adam Morrison's stats from last night for an example:

Walks (BB) = 4   Hits = 3   Innings Pitched = 5

4 + 3 = 7  divide by IP so… 7/5 = 1.4 WHIP

A good WHIP hovers right around 1.2-1.5 over the course of a season.

that's good stuff…i never even heard of WHIP!

it sounds like a solid rating to use in tandom with ERA…

i mean if a guy strikes out 12, but gives up 4 runs (due to errors) then it looks like he stinks….and would inadvertenly take a "hit" statistically - even though he did a great job K'ing folks…

Re: Eastern Michigan Game 1 thread...

If he gives up 4 runs due to errors then they aren't "earned" runs, so that wouldn't effect him.

So say someone leads off and hits a ball between the short stops legs, that's an error.  If that runner scores later on its unearned and won't effect his ERA.
