Rubber turf

Whenever we do actually start construction on the new stadium i think we should go with the new rubber turf.  Theyve come a long way with this stuff.  My old high school put it down in 2005 and it looks great.  They can even give it a more natural look with different shades of green.  All at a one time cost of $600,000, this stuff even looks better than real grass and is much safer than the old astro turf we used to know.  Here's a few pics of the new turf at my old high school up in N.C..

Re: Rubber turf

When I worked at NMSU, we toyed with the idea.

But here is the deal breaker:

The sun is so strong down here and out west that it will ruin the rubber in a short amount of time.  At NMSU, we were told it would need to be replaced every 3-4 years.

Re: Rubber turf

Interesting, I didnt even think about that.  Looks like it will probably be natural grass then.

Re: Rubber turf

I really like the stuff and it seems that most newly renovated high schools are also using it, Boca High has it, and my old high school put it down a couple years ago. I didn't know about the sun messing with it and all.

Re: Rubber turf

Boca High has it? I drove by their new field the other day and that looked like grass to me.

Re: Rubber turf

Maybe Boca High used to have it?

It's an artificial surface…

Re: Rubber turf

Boca High definitely has a turf field exactly like our new track and field.  I saw them stitching in the lines and adding the rubber dirt pellets.

Re: Rubber turf

Interesting… well, I guess we can judge for ourselves how that type of field holds up by watching Boca High.

Re: Rubber turf

Artificial turf has one more advantage: With natural turf, could you see a burrowing owl slip in and set up housekeeping (nest) on the 15 yard line or somewhere? As a protected species, could it be (legally) moved? Good story? Yes. Good for football? Nope. Ah, something else to worry about....
