FAU to open indie/world theater complex on campus

…in May/June 2010.

From the agreement with Living Room Theaters (LRT) to be approved in an upcoming BOT meeting:
http://www.fau.edu/bot/files/061108_SPA3_Living_Room_Theatre.pdf

Snippets:
- technically, the theater would be a film studies academic facility
- theater will be 8200 gross square feet with 650 square feet common area; four digital cinemas with 50 seats each, a small kitchen and a small office
- theater will be open at nights and on weekends
- kitchen will be an "upscale market cafe" serving "tapas, sophisticated sandwiches, beer and wine"
- Will offer film studies students the ability to learn the digital film business
- Discounted tickets for students
- The film schedule will bring in important films from around the world.
- This will allow film festivals to be shown on campus.
- LRT will collaborate with FAU to bring in directors, producers, screenwriters, etc.

Not only great for FAU and the communication/film students but also gives the general student populace one more thing to do on the nights/weekends.

So if everything goes up on schedule, by 2010 we'll have 4000+ residential students, an indie theater, a new rec center with a big outdoor leisure pool, a football stadium and restaurants/shops of the Innovation Village. Not too shabby.

…….they're also going to be adding 200 bed housing to Jupiter and something called the Aristotle Center here in Boca. Whatever that may be… looks like a private donation of $4.2 mill will create a 16400 foot facility for "Office/classroom/exhbition."

very good news…. with all the focus on the stadium its easy to forget the other great things happening on campus.

That being said……

Now if we could just get someone to give $4.2M for the stadium

I was just on the website of Living Room Theaters and its interesting to note that they are in Portland, OR......Does anyone know what connection, if any, made them choose FAU over the countless choices between here and Oregon?

I visited the website and I have to say… I think this is a really, really cool concept and I'm amazed that FAU will have one.

The Portland, Oregon LRT venue is called a "gem" of the city… here's the kitchen area

and this isn't from LRT but if you check the "Theater tour" section of the LRT website, their layout and concept is very similar:

I do agree with one critic that wondered if they could earn enough revenue showing movies like <a href="

So I wouldn't be surprised if they showed at least one more popular movie among the others here (not necessarily a "Transformers"-type of blockbuster but at least something like "Memento" or "Lost in Translation")

I think one of big selling points is that it is all digital.  It will be like watching a movie screen sized HDTV, compared to the usual film with its obvious drawbacks.

If we can be at the forefront of a new trend, great.  I wouldn't mind seeing movies there, those seats look mighty comfortable

That's a good question… I would imagine somewhere near the Education and Business buildings. The Master Plan includes an unnamed building west of Education… it could go there. It could also be part of the Innovation Village since the Innovation Village retail suggestion plan – partly on my advice – considered some space for a small theater.

I know that's on the opposite side of campus from the Communications department but really the only room over by Communications is already spoken for: the parking lot of IRT will become a general education building (in 2009), a parking garage (sometime in the future) and the Master Plan calls for a recital hall there. Then you have the lake, land that may become the hospital and… yeah… that area is pretty much spoken for.
