Horn fan with a question

Post

Hey Owls,

I'm looking forward to opening up the football season against FAU.  Should be a great game.  If you plan to make the trip to Austin, please enjoy our city.  We're a little bit proud of it (if you haven't figured that out yet).  Feel free to pick my brain for places to stay, eat, barhop, etc.  It's a great town and gameday is always fun.

My question:  As luck would have it, I'll be in Ft. Lauderdale on Labor Day weekend.  We're staying at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, FL.  We're looking for a nice bar that will be showing the game (PPV only).  If possible, I would prefer to find a place near the water/marina/beach that will have the game on.  Thanks in advance for everyone's help.  Hook Em Horns.

Re: Horn fan with a question

I don't know about the Hollywood hot spots, I'm sure some others here can help out, but the Diplomat is pretty swanky.

I do have a couple questions for you:
What is the one place in Austin we need to eat?
What are the must visits on 6th St.?

Horn fan with a question

Impossible questions to answer.  I'll just list must eats for each type of food:

tacos-Torchy's:  There are several locations, the green chile shredded pork tacos are unreal.  Conventional tacos are great also
burger-Casino el Camino:  Great burgers in a dark bar setting.  2 birds with one stone bceause it's on 6th.
pizza-Homeslice Pizza:  trendy pizza joint with nice folks and good beer.  Be prepared to wait.  Also a favotite of the Friday Night Lights cast.
sushi-Uchi: without a doubt the best sushi I've ever had.  Very pricy and you will wait at least 1.5-2 hours.  Trust me, if sushi is your game, it's worth it.  Tyson Cole is the chef and he was just on Iron Chef.
brunch-South Congress Cafe:  great neighborhood.  try the grilled tuna tacos or carrot cake french toast
Brunch-Moonshine:  awesome buffet on Sunday.
drinks/nachos:  Guero's:  they have a great beer garden, usually with live music.
Texmex-too many to choose from.  Pick one, Maudies, El Gallo, Matt's El Rancho
BBQ-saltlick:  it's a little drive, but the Q is great and it's BYOB

6th St is not great.  Of course, it depends on your age but it's generally a lot like Bourbon St.  I usually spend a lot more time on WEST 6th st or 4th street area.  Much more pub like atmosphere with 25-35 year old crowd.  EAST 6th is like Bourbon St with cheesy clubs and loud obnoxious kids.  Can you tell I'm getting old?  If you want to see some live music, check out Red River area.  I would check out Mohawk Lounge, Emo's, Beauty Bar, Club De Ville.  Have fun.

Is that the place that 800 fans took over on Dec. 23 as we chanted FAU —- FAU —– and yelled at Memphis fans?

It is not on the water, but you might want to check out Hard Rock Casino. The place is definately happening and not to far from where your staying. You might want to call them 1st though to see if they will be showing the game.

Re: Horn fan with a question

RHorn,

Can't thank you enough for the great food/bar recos it's really appreciated.

Let me return the favor: Le Tub, it's 3 minutes just north of the Dip and was in GQ's 10 best burgers in america…it's an old gas station that's been converted to a little dive restaurant, cash only, lots of outside seating on the intracoastal, and the service isn't great but that's part of the "charm." The burgers…freaking ridiculous. No flash, no 47 toppings to choose from, they take a long time to get to your table but will be worth the wait. Oh and don't order water because you have to get it yourself out of a 5 gallon gatorade cooler!

The bars/clubs at the Dip probably won't show the game and I honestly can't give you a place to see the game south of Ft. Lauderdale but the Hard Rock is worth checking out, we've got blackjack now, though the crowd on a Saturday night might not be your speed. you should go to Dania Jai Alai if you can, about 10 minutes north of where you're staying, it's a trip, like a total time warp to 1970 and beers are super cheap. Jackson's ice cream is close to you as well which was one USA Today's top 3 ice cream parlors in the US, make their own ice cream, try the kitchen sink.

Welcome rhorn.

Regarding a place that will show the game… I could be wrong but since it's PPV, I don't think a lot of places in Ft.Lauderdale are going to be inclined to show it since they'd have to pay for it. Up in Boca there should be watch parties so the bars/restaurants hosting watch parties (like Duffy's on St.Andrews Blvd, Boca Raton) will show it. Problem there for you is being a Longhorn in a sea of Owl fans. I suppose you could always wear a normal shirt instead of a Texas shirt to avoid being ribbed by us.

Anyway I do hope someone else can prove me wrong about places in Ft.lauderdale because I know you're going to want to see the game.
