Step 1: Understand the rules of the league that you are refereeing in. Rules differ on what constitutes a technical foul depending on the league. For example, some leagues demand an instant technical foul if a player or coach argues with a referee. On the other hand, other leagues are a lot more lenient and only call for technical fouls if there is excessive arguing or other extenuating circumstances. Once you understand where the line is in the league you are refereeing, you need to base your decisions upon that line instead of a personal preference.
Owl's Nest evaluation from last night's events: The head referee must believe that the SBC prefers that each techincal foul be called by the same official. This differs vastly from the normal practice of letting a partner serve as an emotional check and balance; and thus be the only ensuing issuee on subsequent technicals called.
Grade: D-
Step 2: Explain to the players and coaches the rules concerning technical fouls before the game you are refereeing. As long as you explain the line, players and coaches tend to be more understanding and will respect your situation. If you are instructed to call technical fouls for any arguing, that should be made clear before the game. You can eliminate any confusion by telling both teams the policy on calling technical fouls before it becomes an issue.
Owl's Nest evaluation from last night's events: Did this happen whatsoever? Or did the referee get hot under the collar, lose control over his on emotions (acting like a Cop on his first day on the beat) and let that drive the last two calls?
Grade: F
Step 3: Give a warning before calling a technical foul. If a player or coach crosses the line, you can opt to give a verbal warning the first time. While this step is optional, it's a good policy to follow that is oftentimes the fairest way to handle technical fouls. Most of the time, players and coaches respect your verbal warning and it can save you from having to call a technical foul.
Owl's Nest evaluation from last night's events: Ok, there was an "angry" stubborn warning issued. Which Jarvis did not heed. But he just stood there for the most part. Is that a crime?
Grade: C-
Step 4: Clarify why you have given a technical foul. After you've called a technical, calmly explain what prompted you to call the technical foul. Avoid getting demonstrative as that could escalate the situation. If you keep your cool, that can keep emotions from boiling over.
Owl's Nest evaluation from last night's events: No further comment.

You should fwd this in an email to the Sunbelt. Can't hurt. I'd tell them you're a member of the media and this is what you saw. Like I stated previously if Jarvis is suspended than that official should be as well
I think that is a great idea, I can't believe that this is the game that I miss. :P
