FAU Women Defeat Arkansas State 54-44

Defensive Effort Gives Owls Fourth Straight Win

Jonesboro, AR (January 25, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University got 14 points from Carla Stubbs and forced 24 Arkansas State turnovers as FAU gets their fourth straight win, a 54-44 decision over the Red Wolves at the Convocation Center on Sunday.

Both teams traded buckets through the early going until FAU jumped out to the lead. Two three-point baskets by Stubbs put the Owls on top 12-8. The Owls would send the lead to double-digits on a lay-up by Jaimie Givens, however, after that FAU would get cold towards the end of the first half. The Owls would go nine minutes without a field goal to end the half, however, the Owls held on to a 25-21 lead at the break.

A jumper by ASU’s Brittney Hiles would cut the FAU lead to two points early in the second half. However, the Red Wolves would get no closer as FAU went on a 9-2 run. A jumper by Andrea Taylor would put the Owls ahead by double-digits, and FAU would coast to victory as ASU only shot 36 percent in the second half.

“This was a good team victory for us,” said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. “We made some adjustments at halftime and to our kids’ credit, they responded well.”

FAU (8-11, 5-4 Sun Belt) only shot 29 percent (17-58) from the field. However, they did out rebound Arkansas State 41-33 and made 16 of 20 from the foul line. Jessica Knurick was the only other player in double digits for the Owls with 11 as FAU earns their largest winning streak since February12-March 2, 2006.

Arkansas State (9-11, 3-6 SBC) was led by Ebonie Jefferson with 14 points. Shania Hurst was the only other player in double digits for the Red Wolves with 11 as ASU drops their third game in a row.

The Owls return home to face the University of Arkansas-Little Rock at FAU Arena on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. For tickets and more information, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
