Florida Atlantic University was led by Brittany Bowe’s 17 points on Wednesday night. However, they were unable to avoid a late run by the Privateers as New Orleans defeated FAU 65-55 at Lakefront Arena.

The Owls got off to a hot start early. Carla Stubbs hit a three-pointer to culminate a 7-0 start early. FAU would then push that lead to ten as a jumper by Teri Stamps gave the Owls an 18-8 advantage with 9:19 to go in the half. The Privateers would get out on a run late in the half; Brittney Helm’s three-point play culminated a 12-2 run to tie the ballgame. The game would stay tied 29-29 at the half.

The game would stay even through much of the second half, as there were eight ties and seven lead changes between both teams. An Andrea Taylor jumper would give FAU a 46-45 lead with just over eight minutes left in the game. However, that would be the last time the Owls would hold the lead, as New Orleans went on an 8-0 run over a five minute stretch. A three-pointer by UNO’s Nicole Holmes put the Privateers up 53-46 with two and a half minutes to go, and FAU would not get any closer after that.

“We just shot way to many three’s for no reason,” said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan. “We need to find somebody who’ll put a body in the post.”

Brittany Helm led all scorers for New Orleans (11-12, 6-6 Sun Belt) with 18 points; she also would pick up seven rebounds. Jada Frazier added 15 points and Candice McGee scored 12. The Privateers shot a school record 19 of 20 from the foul line and out rebounded FAU 36-32.

Two players scored double-figures for FAU (9-13, 6-6 SBC), led by Bowe’s 17. Taylor scored 14 points and went two for six from beyond the arc. FAU shot 22 of 58 on the game and only made 10 of 30 shots in the second half, only making two of 11 three-pointers.

FAU returns home to FAU Arena to face the Troy Trojans on Saturday, February 7. The game is part of the WBCA National Girls and Women in Sports Day, and will feature a performance at halftime and a pre-game autograph session with the Miami Heat Dancers.
