BOCA RATON (February 11, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies and WPBT2 in Miami have joined forces to establish a unique opportunity for FAU students to produce news segments that will appear on “Issues,” WPBT2’s long-running weekly public affairs series hosted by Helen Ferre. In a new course at FAU, entitled TV News Production, students will be taught investigative reporting and will be responsible for researching and preparing stories, and arranging for newsmaker guests that will appear on the show. They will produce video segments each month, with the first segment appearing on WPBT2’s uVu, a community video platform, beginning Friday, February 13.

“This is a great opportunity for our multimedia studies students to work with a professional organization to help produce feature news shows,” said Susan Reilly, director of FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies. “This kind of experience helps these students build their portfolios for future jobs.”

WPBT2 has generously provided the class with video Flip video cameras to aid in production of the Issues and uVu segments. The Issues production crew also will work with the students as they prepare their final segments.

“This course gives FAU journalism students an opportunity not only to learn how to be effective reporters for all media, but also to actively participate in the production of a regularly scheduled news and public affairs program on one of the nation’s leading public television stations,” said Scott

FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies has a similar working relationship with Scripps Howard Treasure Coast Newspapers in which FAU journalism students work with the media outlet to produce content for their newspapers and website."

Re: FAU Students to Produce News Segments for WPBT2

I had Mr. Scott Last semester for US Journalism and he is an amazing man. He was working very hard last semester and eventually wants FAU to have OWL TV (or something like it) viewable to all Palm Beach County. Students in this class had to have recommendations and had to be interviewed to get in. This hopefully will be a very good thing for FAU's School of Communication.

That would be awesome. Although we'd want to be well-represented and I'm sure it would take a significant investment to get better equipment, build a professional-looking news studio backdrop, etc

We're really in a prime location (near Miami) to have not only a good journalism program but also a good film program. Especially film, what with the new digital movie theater coming to campus. Build two sound stages, an extensive prop room, get professional equipment… bam, you have all the amenities of a film school…
