The Florida Atlantic University swim and dive team completed day one of the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Championships last night in Nashville, Tennessee. The women are in third place and the men are eighth.

FAU swam well in all four of the relay events and the 200 yard medley relay team set a new school record. The team, composed of Lindsey Alexander, Kalina Neal, Jonna Nyback and Stephanie DeRito, lowered the school record mark to 1:43.02 and finished third. Alexander was on the previous school record relay team, set last season. Alexander and Nyback later joined teammates Julie Carmigniani and Jennifer Forcht on the 800 yard freestyle relay team and finished third in a time of 7:25.81.

On the men’s side Tyler Griffith, Miguel Dorante, David Rudolf and Evan Boley touched the pad in fifth place in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:32.35. Four freshmen made up the 800 yard freestyle relay that finished ninth.

The SBC Championships will resume today with the 500 yard freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle relay and the women’s three-meter dive. SBC team champions will be crowned on Saturday.

I believe So. Illinois is in the Missouri Valley Conference. They play D1AA football in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. They are a member of the SBC for swimming. Joined just a few years ago.

The rest that are MAC members are SBC members in swimming only and joined 2008.
