Owls Take Double-Header from Stony Brook; Go For The Sweep Tommorow
OF Anthony Mesa
Anthony Mesa had a big day at the plate, going 7 for 9, for FAU in a 9-1 and a 10-2 victory over Stony Brook University.
The Owls (5-1) got on the board with a solo homer to left by Nick Del Guidice. FAU plated another in the second and had a big inning in the fourth putting together three hits, including a three-run homer by Jeremy Griffiths. They scored two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The Owls were stellar on the mound getting an important seven innings from starter Barry Rooks. Rooks allowed just five hits, walked three and earned one strikeout. His performance was bolstered by FAU’s defense which stalled Stony Brook into stranding six runners.
Rooks, who picked up his first win, was relieved in the eighth by Ryan Garton who gave up one earned run. Lou Morey finished the game facing the minimum three batters.
In game two, FAU was held scoreless in the first but scored in each of the next five innings.
The Owls scored three in the second, the first two courtesy of a David Wilson homer. The second multiple-run inning for FAU came in the fifth. Ryan Garton doubled in two runs only to see Troy Bubley follow with a homer. One more run was scored in the sixth.
Glen Troyanowski improved to 1-1 on the year behind six innings of work. Troyanowski struck out six and walked two. Both runs scored by Stony Brook were earned and allowed by Troyanowski. The Owls went deep into the bull pen using three relief pitchers. Ryan Bernal made his second appearance and retired each of the three batters he faced, including one by strike out. Ahmed Garcia followed and allowed one hit. Hugh Adams finished the game and also allowed a hit.
The two teams will be back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday, when the Owls will look to complete the four game sweep.
