FAU Over Lehigh 11-9

Florida Atlantic University’s baseball team continued to hit with authority and turned in a strong bullpen performance in an 11-9 victory over Lehigh University.

Lehigh (3-6) jumped on the board early with three runs in the first. The Owls responded in the bottom half of the inning to match the score at three. FAU scored two in the bottom of the second to take its first lead of the game only to see LU put up five runs in the top of the third and a run in the fourth.

FAU (7-1) chipped away with a run in the fourth. The Owls returned to the field in the top of the fifth down 9-6. Lou Morey took to the mound after recording the final two outs of the second to pitch two scoreless innings giving the Owls an opportunity at the plate.

The Owls offense came alive in the fifth. Nick Criaris led off with a single to right. Tom Hatcher followed with a single up the middle placing runners on first and second. David Wilson then followed with a three run homer to left. Wilson’s homer evened the score at night and put FAU back into the driver’s seat. Third baseman Troy Bubley followed with a double and moved up on a wild pitch. Newcomer Anthony Mesa then hit a double to center to score what would be the game’s deciding run.

The Owls would add an insurance run in the bottom of the six and would then watch as FAU’s pen held Lehigh scoreless in the final five innings of the game. Freshman Ahmed Garcia tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, retiring three by strike outs, and giving up just one walk. Garcia gave way to Hugh Adams who closed out a scoreless ninth to pick up his second save of the season and preserve the win for Lou Morey, his first of the season.

Offensively, seven FAU batters had multiple hits. Travis Ozga and Wilson drove in three runs each; while Mesa added two.

FAU will next travel to Gainesville, FL where the Owls will face the University of Florida 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The team will return home to play host in a three-game Sun Belt Conference weekend series with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
